President Day Date vs. SS Submariner Date

In your opinion, which of these is the "Rolex Icon"?

Which do you prefer?

I agree with Roger. The truly iconic Rolex model is the steel/gold Datejust. Look at any large dealer's display cases to get an idea what percentage of Rolex's sales is comprised of that model (and it's all-steel mate.)

Of the two you mention, both are well-known and classic Rolex models. When most people think of a "dive watch", they're thinking of the Submariner. And when they think of what the high-powered (but lacking in taste ;-)) business executive wears, they think of a yellow gold Day-Date. The tasteful exec, of couse, wears a classic Patek, Vacheron, or equivalent with his impeccably tailored suits - not a garish hunk of gold.

Which do I prefer? It's hard to choose one over the other. I wouldn't typically wear the Day-Date on a ride with my bicycle club, although I have done it. And I certainly wouldn't wear a Submariner with a business suit. Each has its place in one's collection of watches.

The Day-Date is the flagship model of Rolex.
The Submariner is most likely the icon of Rolex (sports) watches.

I would say they are both icons. Rolex has done a great job both making and marketing their watches. If you think dive watches, your mind immediately thinks about the Submariner and it's style practically defines divers. If you think dress watch, the Day-Date immediately comes to mind and many people take it as a trusted sign of accomplishment. You can't do much better than that.

I prefer the Day-Date; but it's hard to compare two such different models.

As for the icon question, I'd also say the Day-Date.

If you were to ask most people about Rolex, I think the Day-Date (or the TT DJ w/jublilee) would be the first image that would come to mind.

In terms of which sport watch is most frequently seen, I'd go with the SS Sub; but I'd say the Daytona is the iconic Rolex sport watch; though my view on that is probably swayed by living in Japan, where the SS Daytona is revered, and also by my habit of reading Rolex discussion boards, where the SS Daytona is treated as the ultimate find.
