Do you think Rolex will be as influential on younger generations as it was for us?

I grew up seeing Rolex's advertisements in National Geographic as well as in airports. I wonder if Rolex will impart as strong of an impression to young and future generations as it has for us.

Maybe. Depends on cultural shifts and how Rolex maximizes brand awareness / reputation.

I think so, it certainly has for me at least. I’ve seen tons of Rolex ads on billboards, in magazines, sponsoring events, etc. I didn’t grow up with my family having an appreciation for watches necessarily but it was organically fostered, I think it will continue that way.

Of course. Rolex advertising is more widespread now than ever before.

i do

I think you are seeing it with the scarcity. You cant have it and you now want it. Its a different generation of buyer and scarcity and difficulty in getting it makes it more of a status symbol than just being able to drop 10k on something readily available. Money as a mark of status isnt enough anymore. Its just different now, but just as influential and maybe more so.

This ^^^^

Millennials have already shown that:

-they like to spend money
-they like to use social media to show off what they spend their money on
-they like exclusivity

Rolex is playing right in to these things and will continue to be very successful with younger generations.

35 here (not sure if I’m the “younger” generation) but it’s alive and well.

However as with most things I’ve seen a big interest in the high quality small batch micro brands. Firms like MKII are becoming very popular due to the social media presence.

Outside of the WIS crowd Rolex will always carry its prestige and thus buyers.

Upcoming generations will prefer Rolex more as jewelery rather than a timepiece. Can’t tell who many I see checking their phones for the time while wearing a watch.

You should be hitting up Patek for that, have already told you, you’ve got one of the most in demand stocks in London

I would say so - they are doing a good job of adapting if scarcity is their new play. Annoying as it is, I think it's the one way to maintain status in a world where the rich and moneyed have more money than ever.

To the wall street class, 25k on a watch isn't a huge deal if it's the right watch. I'm in my late 30s and have been into watches for the last 5-6 years. Before that and even up until a couple years ago, I thought Rolex was a punchline - good watches, but trite and unimaginative...every successful exec I knew had a Sub it seemed. But now that I am a little older, understand the market better, (and okay...maybe having a BLNR now myself has something to do with it...) I have a different appreciation of the brand.

Also this is something little, but I think bringing some color to the mainstream - returning Pepsi to SS, the BLNR, Hulk, LV, etc...color appeals to younger generations. If I count as younger still, I am proof.

The aggressive marketing of Rolex shows no signs of slowing down so I would say yes. With estimated sales of one million pieces per year, I suspect kids will be seeing Rolex on mom & dad’s wrists for generations to come.

This ^. Instagram makes youth want more expensive goods than they can currently afford.

I'm 33, and the number of Subs and DJs I see walking around (granted, in NYC) is staggering. I think it will always be the first watch you buy for yourself once you've "arrived"

You are spot on Dan. I'm guessing the watch industry - not Rolex - is quite worried about people just not wearing watches any longer. When they do it's just as an accessory, then time is checked on their phones.

I'm 45 and have worn a watch every day since I was 18 because I like to know the time at a glance. It's functional.

I never knew what a Rolex was until I was in my late teens. My 10 tear old already knows what it is, from watching successful youtubers show their treasure.

I’m 35 and FWIW I do not see many young professionals with any interest in timepieces. These are folks with disposable income. A good deal of young professionals I’ve spoken to view Rolex as being douchey or for tools. This applies to Sports cars as well. Obviously not a view I share.

Not only will Rolex continue to have a huge role in the luxury watch segment in the future, I’ll go as far and say that other brands such as AP, Patek, Panerai etc will also be widely known and recognized if not already

I think the title begs a question and makes an assumption. Other than being aware of James Bond's watch, Rolex had virtually no influence on my younger life. I bought my first Rolex at age 61, after retirement, and only then began learning about the brand.

With the pervasiveness of the internet and social media, I suspect "youngsters" of today have much more awareness than I did, and many others.

Yes, it looks like social media will be the driving force behind a lot of what is successful and not, and so far Rolex are identified as a hyped up in play brand and while this continues, and no reason it won't as long as it remains a leading status symbol in the £5-10K category, it will thrive.
