If a Submariner cost the same as a Sub Date?

If Rolex decides tomorrow that the Sub and the Sub Date will have the same MSRP of $8550, would the No Date still be as popular? Kind of how auto manufacturers give you the option of automatic (which usually costs more) but lets you choose the manual at "no charge". One of the biggest selling point of the ND over the Date for me was the price. I would definitely go for the Date if they were the same.

Automatic is more expensive with many manufacturers, especially in Europe.

And the date costs more because it’s a different movement.

The No Date appeals to "purists" and collectors.

On the used market, NDs eventually catch up with Dates as time goes by.

Rolex has to charge more since its a more complicated movement.

A Submariner has no date and any car worth driving has a manual transmission.

I think the price difference is not the biggest concern for most buyers

Porsche’s PDK would probably disagree with that

Once you’re spending that much $ for a watch it would be silly to let the price difference keep you from getting exactly what you want. I suspect the $ is a non factor.

When looking at an $8,000+ watch, I don’t think anyone is choosing the ND to save $500.

I agree. $1,050 is a small price to pay to get the watch you actually want instead of settling and most likely regretting it.

What if the ND cost $1,000 more than the sub date... would it become even more popular?

I don't think it is a price issue, but the clean, tasteful look of the Submariner. Long live the manual transmission.

I would go for the No Date, but I’ll get the Hulk to add some variety.

To me they are completely different. Personally, I would take a ND over a date.

I would get the one I wanted regardless of price difference. Funny though, when i bought my first back in 2004, I couldn't get a new 16610 at an AD anywhere so I bought a 14060M instead.

I’ve never heard of someone getting a sub over a sub date because they wanted to save money. I don’t think the sub is a “popular” watch compared w the sub date ... the latter appears to the masses and WIS whereas it’s my impression is that the former appeals more to WIS.

No-date for the 5-digit reference because it looks more clean and the watch looks more tooly, but date for the 6-digit reference because it sports a dressier looking design — with a supercase and a maxi dial, I feel the watch looks incomplete with the cyclops missing.

Agreed, not to mention Formula 1, the pinnacle of automotive racing and performance.
Manuals are fun but if you've ever driven a real dual clutch transmission in aggression, you'd realize which is indeed better for fun and performance.

I agree 100% with the general sentiment here. Don't think the price is a factor at all. Just a matter of preference. I'm also with the Sub camp.

I love the date function on my watches. It’s important to me, but not others.
