Sub not ultimate dive watch?

The Sub is often referred to as an ultimate dive watch, if not THE ultimate. But is it? I’m not questioning the design, sturdiness and treats as a dive watch. It is the more or less exclusive price range this watch is in. I know but a few divers: my colleague, a hobby diver, a buddy who’s a Navy diver and my neighbor, who’s a diver with the local fire brigade. None of them wear a Rolex! All of them, all be it coincidental, wear a Citizen dive watch in various guises and a two of them a separate dive computer. The Citizen has an electronic depth gauge that they use as a backup for the one in the dive computer.

In one of the first James Bond novels the Sub was described as an affordable watch. A bit butch but waterproof. The affordability is long gone now and a humble fire brigade diver cannot afford a Rolex but is issued with a Citizen.

The only professional organization and it’s divers I know of that wear Rolex watches are French Comex. All the others I know that wear a Sub are no divers at all and I’m an armchair diver myself. (Fully certified).

What’s your opinion or experience on/with this?

it is true the dive computer has all but replaced the wrist watch for divers. many still wear watches as a backup but rarely use them for anything more than telling time.

not to mention the cost of a sub or SD is not practical for most folks.

even as far as capability even the SD is not top of the heap. there are numerous watches out there that can go deeper and have better lume ie. legability.

all that being said i love my SD and would not trade it for any other time piece.

Deeper yes (the oil filled watches go to 11,000 meters) but what's the use? 700 meters is about the deepest a diver can go I once read. Padi, do you know about this?

not sure about the max depth a human can endure but i would imagine that it is less than 4000ft so the SD is ok in that reguard. in dive watches top of the heap is generally defined by what it capable of ie depth, legability, durability, temperature tolerance additional features etc.

i always say how many diver/tool watches can you still wear with a tux?

not many. gotta love the SD even if it is not king of the seas anymore.

I am not some freak or idiot that thinks Panerai is better, I just personally like it and other brands more. I tried on a JLC World MC chrono today, I was blown away. Of course there is still my grail watch, the VC overseas chrono in black dial. YUMMY.
