An homage to the 1954 GMT?

It just hit me than the new Tudor GMT Pepsi is really an homage to the very first Rolex GMT which if I am not mistaking came out in 1954 ish. Kind of interesting to see it started without any crown guards. I also learned recently, that until the early sixties?, the cyclope was an option on any models, one reason once in a while a vintage submariner date comes up for sale without a cyclops... Of course the first gmt was also available with or without the controversial cyclops.

Very astute observation. After looking at both pics it’s hard not to see the striking similarities between the two watches. I was doing some reading on the GMT’s history regarding the “Pepsi” blue/red bezel and it turns out the the top part of the bezel which is blue signifies nighttime and the red (sun light?) signifies daytime.

It’s a shame the colours are a little subdued on the Tudor GMT. A nice reference nevertheless.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh as I find the BB case rather large and top-heavy.

This is why the BLNR never made sense to me from a functionality standpoint. The blue is great if you like blue but daytime should be indicated in a warm color like red or brown. Blue has (previously) always been night on the GMT bezel.

The huge numbers written on the bezel provide plenty functionality in that regard.

Indeed. The large numbers also balance well with the size of the lugs. I'm purely taking about color in this instance. I like the LN and BLRO but never warmed up to the BLNR.

I agree. I have always felt the BLNR didn’t fit the Rolex GMT narrative... sort of adding a new color for the sake of doing something new. Some how it doesn’t seem to fit-in and isn’t as exciting...

I’d have to add a cyclops if I owned that beauty
