Repatriating a watch to the US

Hi folks,

I'm the Canadian owner of a IWC Big Pilot that was originally purchased in the US, but made its way to Canada.

I am curious if anyone knows if duty would have to be paid on the watch again if it was purchased and brought back into the US?

Cheers!

I know in the EU, the answer is no, if you can show that the item was originally purchased in the EU.

For example, I had a computer, with 19% VAT paid in Germany, but left it at my parent's house in the US. They then shipped it to me, and I showed the local tax office my original receipt (with the serial numbers matching) and how the original purchase was made in Germany and tax had already been paid. Zero issues and I was on my way.

I'm *almost positive* this is the exact same thing in the US. I'm also *almost positive* it is illegal to 'double tax' any item, regardless of where it travels after the fact. If this were the case, government could claim you owe tax on every item in your suitcase when you go on international travel.

That's what I am hoping. From limited experience, importing a vehicle back into the US you do not have to pay tax/duty again.

Please keep us updated if you get a solid, 100% answer. I'm sure other people might be interested in this, and the solution will be archived in this thread if anybody searches

I moved back to the US last year after years in the ME. All my property was well documented declared by the broker. Anything that was purchased in the US returned duty free.

That includes online purchases, BTW. If you bought something from a US retailer and shipped it to your foreign address, it's still considered a US purchase and will return duty free.

Got it and thank you for continuing to admit and encourage committing a federal crime.

Why does it seem we are the only two people to ever tell people not to do this?
