Why do we use the abbreviation AD?

On a recent visit to my Rolex dealer(where I got to see the new GMTs), I mentioned the term AD. He chuckled and said, “you must be on TRF or another blog site”. He explained its a dead giveaway when a client uses that expression. He said according to RolexUSA, the proper abbreviation is ORJ or Official Rolex Jeweler.
Anyone hear that term before?
By the way, the Rolesor CHNR is a killer. Pass on the new Pepsi....it looks purple and pink.

Did your AD use the acronym "TRF"? If so, they're just as guilty.

Same reason we might say “two-tone” instead of “Rolesor.” One is a universal term and the other is Rolex-ese (i.e., proprietary language invented by Rolex).

According to Rolex, the proper abbreviation is ORJ (Official Rolex Jeweler)

It is, but his "ORJ" tried calling him out on it by using the acronym 'TRF', making it a whirlwind of irony. "AD" is an Internet term equal to "TRF”, making the dealer just as guilty.

On the Rolex website they talk about "The Official Rolex Retailer" so your "AD" doesn't use the correct term himself.

Who really cares what they call themselves.

We still call the guy that picks up the trash the garbage man, not the sanitary engineer or the whatever PC term they use this week.

AD is as good as anything to call an authorized dealer. He could call himself the Crown Prince for all we care.

It’s easier to type and say AD. I guess ORJ is fitting since the newest models are jewelry that look like Rolex watches.

This. Rolex can try to invent its own terms if it wants, but folks are still going to use the perfectly good industry-wide terms that already exist.

If a salesperson ever corrects me from two-tone to Rolesor, I'll roll my eyes so hard I might fall down.

I use AD because it is quicker than typing authorized dealer.

AD is way easier to type out.

Maybe we should refer to them as OGK, “Official Gate Keeper,” since they say who gets a watch and who doesn’t.

So it seems they’re technically ORRs...

I can remember that one. I actually kind of like it

It should be "MORR" for "My Official Rolex Retailer".

But, it's actually "LESS" for "Lacking Every Stainless Steel".

Hit em back with that one and watch the deer and headlights happen.

smh

I prefer the term "stealership" which I learned back in my days on a Audi forum...

Must be each region has its own nomenclature.
Every US jeweler that has Rolex on their website has a link from ‘Official Rolex Jeweler”.
Sorry, it’s really no big deal.
Just AD is only used by a WIS.
At least TRF is an actual abbreviation of something actual.

All those that hate the super hero names I guess will have to start calling dealers by their full and proper names. Its more grown up.

The owner of my AD did once remind me that he was required to use the term Rolesor, as opposed to the terms two-tone and TT, which I was using in our discussion.

He's a great guy and I can only wish that he was still in business. In fact, I miss them all, sales staff, watchmaker, gemologist, security, and all.
