Would you trade... First venture into Patek

Hi all,

I have a deal in principal agreed for a new/unworn Patek Phillipe Aquanaut 5164r.

The deal involves a straight trade for:

2017 used 116500LN (White Dial)
2017 used 116505 (Chocolate Dial)

I have had 5 Daytona's in total now, amongst many other Rolex and AP models.

This would be my first experience with Patek.

Would you guys make the trade?

Appreciate your input.

Totally.

Although Rolex are brilliant, I feel I would rather have a few watches from multiple brilliant watch makers that a 4 Digit Sub, a 5 Digit Sub etc.

Keep your favourite Daytona and then get that Patek! It's a very different watch but it's beautiful. I'm very envious! :)

I’d add an Aquanaut, but wouldn’t trade two good watches for one. 5711? Yes.

Hard to say. All of the watches listed are really great references. Also depends on what else is in the collection. So I think it’s more a matter of personal preference than anything else.

I would say try it on first, then decide which one(s) you would rather live without.

Try it on and see if it speaks to you. I am not sure I would trade, I would probably add but the 5164 is a great piece!

I’m with this. Don’t like the rubber bracelet/strap. So if it was me, I wouldn’t do the trade for the aquanaut. But good luck with the decision

Didn't realize you could actually procure the Patek Phillipe Aquanaut 5164r for less than MSRP. Looks like a pretty even trade based on the secondary market value for the 116500LN and the 116505.

I guess you are trading two Rolex's, including one that is full 18k gold for a Patek with a gold case and a rubber band...

Nope, I dislike the rubber band on the 5164r. If it were a 5711/5712 then most def.

Do you have to decide before seeing the PP? If not, obviously trying it on and seeing how you like it on the wrist is the critical first step. Assuming you do like it I'd be OK with this trade. Normally I wouldn't trade two Rolex for an Aquanaut but a RG one changes things a bit.

That actually sounds like a pretty even swap money-wise. What else do you have in your collection that would remain? I don't blame you for wanting a Patek. Unlike some others here, I actually enjoy the rubber strap (my grail is a 5164 Travel Time).

3 nice watches, but still it would be hard for me to give up 2 relatively new Daytonas for 1 Patek Phillipe that is the 'junior' sport watch w.r.t. the Nautilus, even though the Aquanaut is also very hard to get as well.

My guess is you'd get unanimous validation in the PP section, but the Rolex fans are prolly scratching their heads.

Rather than the trade, do you have the resources to buy the PP and then sell those two Daytona's? That would yield the best financial outcome.

Pruning the Daytona's to make room for the Aquanaut is not an issue IMHO.

Since you have 5 Daytonas, boot 2 of them and go for the Patek !

I wouldn’t because the aquanaut does absolutely nothing for me. In fact, I think they’re quite plain and blah. Don’t do it just because it’s a Patek, do it because you have fallen in love with the watch. If you have to ask, you’re not in love with it.

Just to clarify this point, you currently have 5 Daytonas and looking to trade 2 in? or throughout the years you've owned 5 Daytonas (implying you don't own 5 currently)?

Honestly, I'd lean making the trade either way, but if you currently have 5 Daytonas, I'd definitely make the trade, if only for variety and the fact that I really like the 5164r.

If you move Daytonas a lot, perhaps you like the design but it goes in and out of favor for you. If that's the case, maybe keep the 500 and look for a trade on a 5164a instead?

Just a thought, fwiw, I have always been a Rolex guy but added a Patek last year and to me it was well worth the trade, although I added a Nautilus I really do love the 5164 ref as well

That makes sense and I like the notion of consolidating as well.

If it were me, I'd do it. I've never owned a Daytona, but I do have a couple Rolexes (BLNR and 116655), which I really enjoy and appreciate, but there's just something different about a Patek IMO. That said, I'm not surprised by TRF bias toward Rolex.

Regardless, please let us know and post some pics when you get a chance to try it on

I love Patek but personally would not trade here simply because I don't like giving up so much for a watch on a rubber strap. If the rubber strap isn't an issue for you, go for it.

I really would do this, I am a PM guy but prefer the 64a, which I own, to the 64r and then I'd really keep hold of the white D500. Otherwise I'd sell another Rolex.

Definitely for sure! You already have 5 Daytonas, so as long as you keep one good specimen, you should be good.

The Patek 5164R is in a totally different ballgame than the normal Rolex varieties. If you base the trade on MSRP, you come out ahead, even with the premium on the 500c.

I wouldn't do the trade if it was for the Nautilus 5711, since the $50k+ grey market value has already been "priced in".

Just remember though that the 5164R will be on a soft rubber strap. Perhaps try to separately source an Aquanaut bracelet to change it up?
