How much does a sales person at an AD make?
Seems like a job I would be very interested in as I would be around watches that I love everyday! and get to talk about them with people from all over the city and world. It seems that it’s the sales people at an AD who have a lot of leverage in terms of who gets what watch and when..
Also, if you’re a sales person for a Rolex AD and you’re interested in one of the latest and hottest watches e.g., DaytonaC, SS Pepsi, do you get auto added to a list? or get a discount? wonder how that works. Thx! |

1) if you ‘love’ watches, don’t go into watch Sales. Because if it doesn’t work, you’ll end up hating waches, and sales. Go into sales first, because you like people and want to help. The money will then come naturally and you can pick where you want to be. .
2) discounts for sales reps are nothing spectacular. In the current and near future market, you could do the same or better buying lightly used 3) salespeople in stores can have some influence on who gets on a “list”, but ultimately the management and ownership make the final call 4) to get a gig at a Rolex or premium manufacturer, start small and grow your personal brand (you, as a professional) in a sales role that’ll pay you to learn how to be around higher net worth clientele, or go the technical route and offer more value to get in the door. I’d actually go to watch making school and then become a subject mater expert and sell with more credibility, if I wanted to go into the biz and make a life out of it. 5) they don’t make as much off the watches as they do off jewelry. Maybe $35 - $45k to start and if you’re a 6 days a weeker, $100 - $150k after many many years. |

Good luck with whatever you do, but seriously, if you love watches, become a watch maker. You’ll make lifelong connections at the schools and with manufacturers. It’s also a trade you take anywhere and it’ll always be in need. And you can then sell with credibility instantly. |

Sales is a profession, it requires training, focus and following strategies.
Knowing the specs and product certainly helps, but let’s face it, the ‘work’ part will be trying to sell inventory that doesn’t move - meeting quotas to hit the commission targets. Can you turn/sell a BLNR or Daytona shopper a Date-Just or Yatchmaster? Guess what, nobody is buying anything in the Bell & Ross case, but you got a quota... This is about where the fun ends for most people. If you enjoy the thrill of the deal, negotiating and pitching, you’ll do well in sales. |

Most watch buyers have no idea what they are buying and in some cases even why they are buying it. Sounds like a frustrating long day for very little pay. Why would you get any discount or jump ahead of retail customers?

IIRC, Rolex ADs allow one employee purchase per year at some discount. No AD is going to defer customers so that employees can have popular models.. |

Actually terrible advice.
In fact I know of someone personally who has done exactly that and it has worked out exactly the opposite of what was suggested here. Of course this person was extremely motivated and became the head of watch sales at an AD. He was actually at one time offered a position with a Patek Boutique in New York but turned it down because being where he currently is in the Midwest makes more sense financially and he sells a wider range of watches. Basically he’s really really good at what he does and makes a six figure income. He sells to enthusiast all over the world from that shop in the Midwest. Well of course this may not be the norm but then again some are only limited by their own imaginations and some make the most of the opportunities they are given.

Well actually in this specific case this gentleman has an extreme passion for watches and his collection of watches is also very very nice. I truly believe he has found his perfect fit. Fact is he was also the one that got me hooked on real fine footwear. By no means is this guy the norm. He’s actually selling what he was meant to sell. He knows and has a passion for watches and he is real great in sales.

Let’s just say if your the guy that established and runs the vintage watch partnership with Leffot and your wearing John Lobb, Edward Green, Gaziano & Girling, and having Bespoke shoes being made by any number of shoemakers then your not your run of the mill every day watch sales person.

By the way I hadn’t been on the Leffot website in awhile and I just took a look. The watches they currently have listed they may now be partnered with someone differently. But believe me initially the watch connection they had not too awfully long ago was with the gentleman I spoke about. Frankly I have no idea who CMT watches is but I don’t think this changes anything I said about this particular individual and his talent or nack for selling watches.

Well besides name dropping I truly believe he’s not only very successful he truly enjoys what he’s doing. It really is a case where one’s passion is married to one’s profession.

That guy is probably more of an outlier than anything else. It's like people using the Bill Gates and Michael Dell didn't graduate college and they're billionaires so I don't need college either.

Absolutely, but he and the story is truly admirable and inspiring if you ask me. Heck, always worth mentioning things like this whenever the opportunity presents itself. So we were talking AD Sales People and I thought I would mention it. Just keep in mind I’ve also seen a few of these sales guys from this AD to go onto careers representing a few different watch brands. So although they may never get where he got there are things you can do if you make the most of what you’ve got. It doesn’t hurt to work at a larger than average store in first place however. To be honest I’m not sure how many opportunities exist now given the current state of things however.

Easiest job in the world at the moment I suspect. The training must be very simple "no we don't have and SS sports in stock, would you be interested in the datejust "

I have no clue cause I haven’t been in an AD in quite awhile. Blessing for me though I already have the watches they evidently don’t make anymore.

There are salespeople, and there are employees who are just there when you show up to buy.
