** Engraving Grandson's 1st Rolex **

My grandson will be graduating from Cornell University this coming May and I plan to purchase his 1st Rolex as a gift.

I want to have it engraved, however will that void any known Rolex warranties or anything? I'm not concerned too much about resale value, I'm hoping he will keep it in the family and eventually pass it down to one of his future children. But I do want to make sure that I'm not doing something that will make it unserviceable or anything like that.

Finally, should I go forward with this, does anyone have any suggestions on an excellent engraver in the Texas area. One that will engrave it while I wait.

Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

(* I apologize, I think I originally posted this in the wrong area it should have been in the general discussion area *)

That's a nice graduation present! I'm sure he'll appreciate and treasure it.

Some ADs (e.g. Tourneau) will engrave for free as part of a new purchase. While I'm not aware of any specific policy RSCs may have toward engraving, if an AD does the work one would hope it wouldn't be scrutinized. That said I'd recommend changing out the screw down case back with a blank one if he ever sends it in to an RSC so that they don't just discard the engraving, which could happen.

My first Submariner that I got as a graduation present from my parents was engraved. I’m quite certain it has no effect on the warranty. My watch is now 27 years old. It has been to the RSC for a routine service and the engraving was not an issue.

The word is that Rolex leaves their case-backs blank just so that they can be engraved.

Rolex engraved watches for Eisenhower and Churchill.

There's no reason why an engraved back would affect the warranty at all.

I have been meaning to tell you that I am your long lost grandson. I have already graduated college, but I will still let you get me any Rolex you want. I won’t even hold the delay against you.

Lovely idea, go for a professional hand engraving instead of the popular laser type.

I'll second that. There's nothing like old school.

That's a wonderful gift for your grandson. Engraving shouldn't be an issue, many ADs offer this service.

I was always more curious if the vibrations from engraving would “mess” with the watch at all?

Id be more curious to see what the laser engraving would look like....

The only watch that cannot be engraved without voiding the warranty is the Deep Sea Sea Dweller.

Huh? I think you take tha caesback off, ingrave it and put it back on. How does that void the warranty?

Rolex gives out engraved Daytonas as racing awards.

my guess is the titanium caseback acts as a expanding and contracting bladder when at extreme depths ad engraving would compromise it's intended functionality

Engraving without opening up the caseback should be fine for the warranty, so make sure no one wants to do or see anything extra.

Sorry, misread and thought he said it was the only one that could be engraved. Makes sense because we're all diving so deep with our fancy watches on.

This, They cannot no longer ensure the waterproof rating of the case to the intended specifications once it has been engraved, therefore no warranty.

I should have said, everything can be engraved within the warranty, except the DSSD. Bad wording on my part, not enough coffee this am.

I'm believe I'm going to engrave something sentimental. I've raised him since he was 4 months old and knowing him as I do, I think he would like that.

The hard part will be for me to be strong and not give it to him until May. I'm such an old softy! :-)
