Besides the necessary condition of people having cash, or (so long as we're keeping it real) credit...

I think social media drives this a bit. I also think it's driven by demographics. Fewer men getting married or having kids equals more disposable cash to spend on themselves. Women's share of total consumption in USA has been sliding downward

No joke - I've met a couple of people in the last few months. Not poor - but certainly not rich either. Lower middle class I'd say - and they all were making monthly payments on expensive watches. I'm dumbfounded of the stupidity
And yes, I'm certain this was done only to enhance social status. Which they lack anyhow.
