Just curious...I've seen 1680 with closed 6s & 9s, as well as 16800. I'm sure there are other models as well but exactly when did Rolex start producing these. Of course with Rolex there is never a solidified start date for anything but perhaps some of you better informed can shed some light.

As you state with Rolex nothing is black and white, but generally depending on reference about the mid 80s.

Interestingly there are some collectors that have early 1680s that swear they came with closed date wheels.

It's a topic that has been debated with as yet no real answer.

So if a 7 mil 16800 has a datewheel with closed 6s & 9s, it wasn't necessarily replaced during service...it may have come with the datewheel originally?

If this can be of any help my early 16800 (1981) is with open 6s & 9s

I would guess that it was replaced somewhere along the line...my 8.3 million serial has open 6's & 9's. What type of dial do you have on it? It should be matte with that serial.

It certainly is a matte dial...but with the closed 6s & 9s. The date numbers have a more pronounced serif at the tips...different from my SD or my old T serial sub...I know this 28 year old watch has seen a service or two in it's day so perhaps it was replaced during service. In doing a bit of research, I've seen both closed & open from that era so I was a bit confused.
