Five people aboard were killed when a twin-engine plane crashed in a parking lot in Santa Ana near Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza mall on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The Cessna 414 went down at about 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a Staples store in the 3800 block of South Bristol Street, according to Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority. The site is just northeast of South Coast Plaza, near the boundary of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana.

RIP.

Saw some of the commotion heading home after breakfast. Didn’t know it was a plane crash. I fly out of John Wayne nearly every week, one of our neighbors is pilot, and our other neighbor is the PIO for the airport. Tragic.

A few months ago, another small plane had a mechanical and crashed on the 405, just short of the runway.
