ADs playing the scarcity game with Tudor???

Had to head up to the mall to pick up something and decided to stop by the Rolex/Tudor AD. They had both the Tudor BB GMT and BB58 on strap to try on. I found that I quite liked the size and profile of the BB58:

Anyways, I was advised that if I wanted one, I would have to give them a 100% deposit, non refundable and a 2-4 month waiting period (and same policy with the GMT.) Their policy is the same for many other Rolex models, even apparently the DJ41s! To add insult to injury, I have a purchase history with this AD, which means zip and it doesn't matter, they still want a 100% deposit.

This was a sign to me that things have gone too far - ADs now playing the scarcity game with Tudor!

not shocked. jr dunn wanted the same from me and i rejected it. since then no call. as opposed to last year when i was wanting the black bay s&g they were calling me right and left. the tables have turned against buyers.

however, i don't need to buy a watch and can wait it out. i like the bb 58, but it is just another black bay.

many people are buying tudor gmt's to flip them when they get the rolex gmt. i wonder how many of these tudor is buying back and throwing in the face of their AD?

My AD did this to my brother. Told him no purchase history, can’t have a tudor. Pissed me off and him. Just stupid. Shortsighted and dumb, it’s a tudor, in 6 months you’ll be able to walk into any ad and buy the gmt out of the case.

Sorry to hear this has reached Tudor. Regardless, that BB58 looks great on you.

Was this Raffi in Yorkdale?

They told me the same thing a couple weeks ago when I inquired about the TT CHNR and BLRO. (No time frame when they will get it but wanted full deposit and no refunds)

I politely said thank you and walked out, drove to Damiani and ordered the TT CHNR from them...they did not give an exact time frame but stated that you can put money down every month and once paid off the next one will be yours (after full paid ones are completed on their list) ... or a full deposit whenever, if you find it elsewhere or do not want it, again - they won't keep your money.

They are a great AD!

I love Tudor but it’s an “accessible” luxury watch. Take away accessibility and what is it?

It’s nothing more than short term demand and will be back to available in a reasonable time frame

I bet I could find one if I called all the ADs in my region... I liked the watch but not sure I liked it enough to buy one. But then to be told about this ridiculous policy, on a watch that'll become plentiful soon enough was a real turn off. This AD won't be getting my business in the future, that's for certain.

I find this funny. I think ADs are just playing a game and it is up to you whether you want to play along or not. I might feel inclined to counter and say that I will take one now if the give me a 20% discount. Otherwise I will spend my money on something else. I wonder what the response would be? "We have one, but you can only have a 10% discount, Sir..."
(I am of course not interested in any Tudor)

Just buy one from another dealer, go back to your original dealer and show it off.

my favorite passive aggressive strategy. Guilty as charged with several london AD's and my BLRO

My favorite was walking into the Rolex boutique and saying:
"I need a new watch, how about showing me that DJ over there"

Full disclosure, i did actually like the DJ in question.

BB58 and GMT are easy to find in France and Switzerland.

100% would have been laughable even two years ago, as far as I'm concerned, but if I really wanted the watch now, I'd probably pay up and I'm guessing that ADs are only doing this because they need to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

Since my AD closed his doors, I'm not able to play these games.

Back in the day, though, patience was my byword.

Am I the only one understanding the deposit thing in a different way? To me the request for deposit is a sign that the AD has NO confidence to sell it in a short period of time if the original requester changes his/her mind. That is normally required for hard to move items.

Few if any AD asked for deposit for SS Daytona, Blro, Hulk etc.

I put down 100% payment down on June 21st for the 58 and got the watch yesterday.
However it was refundable. I have purchashed one watch before this transaction.

You're bad. However, I'd probably try the same if I had a BLRO on my wrist

it was the boutique that invited me to try on basel releases last year (demo models). I showed up about an hour before it ended and they were already packing the watches up to move them to the next store. They said i could not try them and it didn't matter anyway because i couldn't get one.

I went in there last year with another TRF member who was asking about a sea dweller and they basically laughed at him.

So you've got to take the chance when you have it to give some of these not so good ADs a hard time.

You would think it is like that, but this particular AD does it with every in demand model, such as Subs and GMTs even though they probably get dozens of people asking everyday for one. It's a ploy to get to use your money interest free, possibly while leaving you hanging.

Deposit is fine with me, if you really want the watch you are going to pay for it regardless. I don't want to pay a deposit but if thats the way it is, fine. The non refundable part is laughable. From the sounds of the stories i am reading, some of these AD's and sales people are starting to turn into used car lots.

I like the way you roll. I have since trolled a few Rolex and Patek ADs with the Daytona and 5712/5990 when they laughed me off in my search for them.

No this does not surprise me at all, I will never give a down payment to hold a watch. I wonder who the AD was. My wife bought a watch in Waterloo yesteday, is well established and always pays with a money order. I suggested she use a cc for the points. The AD had a fit. Told her it cost them 3%. Even as she was leaving they told her they did her a favor letting her use s cc. The table is going to turn on these AD's and I'm going to laugh.

I am surprised they would take a full deposit on a watch that has a multi-year waitlist. Nice working capital boost for them.

I bought my BLNR at Raffi sq 1, 100% paid up front, but they guaranteed it in 5 weeks. They would not take a deposit on a hulk or Daytona because they had no idea when they would be able to deliver.

Wow, that's crazy! ADs are trying to exploit/squeeze every penny out they can these days... in the past they would see credit cards as a good thing as that's an easy way for people to impulse purchase. And the Waterloo AD is one I've generally only heard good things about too!

It was the AD at Yorkdale by the way (same name, but different owners as Waterloo/Cambridge.) Never felt particularly welcome there, even though the sales have complimented me before on the pieces I'm wearing (I was wearing a PP Nautilus today), it's very much "do you want it now or not", in/out feeling.

Tom, I think the BB58 might be too big for your wrist based on the pic. It's ok to move on.

I was thinking the same thing, but perhaps it's the camera angle. In any case, I think the Tudor GMT would be enormous on that wrist. It's 41mm but very chunky and actually wears larger than my 42mm Explorer II.

A 36mm Datejust, vintage or 5-digit Sub or GMT, or maybe an OP 39mm would be far better looking IMO.
