Is a watch winder necessary?

I'll be wearing my watch during weekends only.

I don't mind manually winding the watch. However, is it okay to leave the watch immobile for the weekdays? Should I purchase a watch winder?

Mine often sit for longer without a winder or being wound. Might be a sin against horology, but I don't think it harms the watches.

A wonder is not necessary, but I use one. It is fine to let Your watch wind down on weekdays.

I've had many "weekend" only watches. Never owned a winder. My wife's DJ sits on one purely so I don't need to adjust it for her lol.

I own a watch wonder and only use it a couple of times mid week. Won’t harm the movement as it only simulates movement which is what you do when you wear it.

If I was to not wear my watch for months at a time, I would rather it sit idle without a winder. That’s just my opinion, lots of threads here that will probably confuse you more so after reading opinions just do what makes you comfortable

It is not necessary but I have them built into my safe so it is very convenient to keep them wound and not have to set them when they haven't been worn in a while.

Look at Wolf Winders.
But as many said, not a requirement. If you have a DD a winder saves some fiddling with the Day & the Date come Saturday though.

I am a huge fan of Orbita winders. I’ve had several and I am extremely pleased with them. I’ve also used a Wolf single watch winder (less expensive) and it was fine but Orbita is special in my book.

Do you want to wind and set your watch every week?
Or do you want it to run continuously so you can grab and go?
Ask yourself these questions. If you want to grab and go, buy a watch winder.
I have a Wolf and love it. Chinese made, but very nice quality and reasonably priced. Others like Orbita, made in USA obviously good quality but on the higher price scale. Best of luck!

Someone once told me that the only real reason to have a winder was if you had a vintage watch without a quick set date, mostly for convenience. The oils dry up at the same rates (years, not days). It won't do any harm, either way, if you are wearing it even semi regularly. Slightly less warm and tear over the (very) long term.

I was contemplating one as well until I saw this video. I watched several other credible videos and they all said the same thing. Don’t do it unless you own a watch with a complication such as a perpetual calendar.

Ahh, this debate again... Let me throw this on the fire for discussion.. Is it better to let your watch run down to work the spring down or is it worse to do that and have more wear and tear on the crown winding it back up ? - If letting your watch go dormant what position is best for the oils within the case...

I Say just wear them and if it's one that you only wear occasionally then no to the winder, why do you want to wear it out for a service interval when you haven't enjoyed it on your wrist..

No wonder necessary - unless you’re talking perpetual calendar....which you are not.

The answer to that question is no I bought three watchwinders & I don’t use any of them if your only going to use the Watch on weekends winding it a couple of times a week at regular intervals will be enough most Rolexes have a power reserve of forty eight hours though some have a power reserve of seventy two hours whichever you have if you wind it a couple of times a week you will be alright

I have fourteen winder slots but all of them turned off. They're a reasonable way to store your watch when not in use. Not necessary imho.

If you'll only wear it twice a week and have a quickset date then it is completely unnecessary. As a side note, you'll be putting wear on the movement while you're not even enjoying the watch.

No they are complete waste of money unless you have a watch with many complications which no Rolex has then they could be purely a convenience.Or if you have lost the use of your fingers so you can't manually wind your watch.And no harm whatsoever to leave your watch stopped for days, or a few months.

I'm not sure what Rolex models Noel is talking about but both mine will have wound down and lost substantial time in 36 hours if not on a winder.
I alternate two watches and the one not being worn is on the winder as I am not interested in setting a watch every day before I put it on.
A week in between wears however, I wouldn't use a winder.
