Something Different - Urwerk

Been chasing the right “something different” for a long long time.

In the early days Richard Mille was on the radar but I hesitated too long and we ran into this crazy bubble and sky high retail prices that we have today. Ah well.

But then there was Urwerk. Young company, independent and doing something a little different.

The first time I had one on the wrist was 5 or 6 years ago on one of many trips to what I refer to as “the land of the independents” (Singapore).



I wasn’t convinced by the watch or the price tag at the time.

Fast forward a few years and I continued to keep an eye on what was happening both new and used. Always checking the auctions .





Still nothing to tickle my fancy. Not even the Only Watch (although as a collab it wasn’t pure Urwerk anyway). Not to mention it was an absolute monster on the wrist (even allowing for the bad camera angle on this photo).



Then, last year I saw the 105 CT. After many trips to various ADs in Singapore, Hong Kong and in the US and having tried both variations on again and again I figured this was the one.

It’s been on the wrist for three or four months at this point and I’m happy with the decision to take the PVD version. It’s both super light and comfortable due to the lack of lugs. Most of the pictures make it look large but honestly that’s just the angle of the photo, the watch actually wears reasonably small in my opinion.

Congratulations... I have been following Urwerk since years too however still never got a chance to try it on. I like their school of thought and unique approach to time keeping.

You definitely need to get one on the wrist but with limited ADs I realize that's difficult. I will say the 105 CT is very wearable, more so in my opinion than the 103's also pictured. I was also fortunate to have some time with the 110 (aka the Ironman watch) and despite its size it too is very wearable (again lack of lugs and light materials is the key).

Thanks. There doesn't seem to be much interest in this side of the Independents here. Lots of Journe for sure, some Kari interest but it seems to pretty much stop right there. I'm not sure whether that's because people have no interest or because these things don't hit or register on one's radar.

Urwerk is a niche brand but I appreciate that they're offering something outside of the norm. I think it's interesting how you tried out different pieces over the years as you progressed toward pulling the trigger on one

Also, frankly, most enthusiasts will only drop this kind of coin on a watch if they know that a liquid pre-owned market for it exists -- which shifts their interest away from independents and toward sport models from Rolex/AP/PP. If they buy independent at all, then FPJ is a recognizable brand and has decent resale

Yes, it was a very long courtship, I think 6 or 7 years between the first in the metal experience to pulling the trigger.

With the name recognition it now seems to have I agree that FPJ is one of the more liquid Independents. FPJ was also my first foray into the Independents too.

Re Urwerk, while liquidity is for sure not there I think resale on many references is not too dissimilar to Lange if you are comparing retail to used/grey pricing.

Jack I'm not sure if your joking or not so I'll take it at face value and answer; 12:43 in the last photo. The little line under the hour lines up with the minute track. The hour "wanders" across the track right to left.

You'll see this wandering hours in a number of other places, besides Urwerk I think AP is probably the next most visible with their Starwheel. It had a number of iterations in the last 20 or so years.

Thanks guys. Definitely not for everyone, and as I showed above it took me 6-7 years to come around (from that first picture taken in 2012 I think to now).

That casing is PVD coating right?

I used to own a RM16 Titalyt (DLC suppose to make the titanium harder) but i managed to scratch it and there is a permanent white line on the watch bezel. Very obvious. Sold it（that ‘white line’ totally distroyed my resale value) and I replaced it with a normal Ti version and happily ever after.

Stay far away from diamonds!

I think I was a little put off by how it actually handles the changeover from one hour to the next. If I recall there was a large amount of overlap where two hours were highlighted.

PVD, yes. Not my first rodeo with PVD, I had a few including one for 8 or 9 years. It is what it is, just need to be careful.
