Short vacay: Austin, Denver or Savannah?

Hi folks,

Title says it. My wife and I want to do a short trip 4 to 5 days at the end of October to one of these places. Problem is we like everything, be it hiking, bike rides, live music, bbq, wineries, etc. We'd prefer Denver but are worried it could be too cold already. Savannah still warm and has Tybee Island. Don't know too much about Austin.

What are your thoughts or would you go somewhere else?

Thanks!!

Do you like history? You can easily do 3-4 days in Savannah just checking out centuries old pubs, museums, and art galleries (the buildings are that old anyway) plus it has open carry alcohol in the historic district. Austin on the other hand is more college town bars and hipster stuff. Just depends on what you like.

Ain't gonna lie, Georgia wine blows (it is very sweet). Texas wine (lots of wineries around austin/hill country) is much better.

Austin has the Alamo in San Antonio an hour or so away, Savannah has Charleston about 2 hours away, so you have good day trip options either place. Seafood in Savannah is way better than Austin, Texas wins with BBQ.

No hiking in Savannah, really, the whole area is pancake flat.

Look at chattanooga TN. Great mountain hiking/biking, the leaves may be changing when you go, the downtown area is really nice and very walkable. Maybe not for 5 days though unless you like reading by the pool or something.

Denver will be in the 50s to 60s during the day that time of year. plenty to do outside and just enough daylight. You can do a quick day trip to the mountains. Fun things are mine tours and zip lining in Idaho Springs. Wildlife spotting in Rocky Mountain National Park is good in late fall as well. October is probably may favorite time of year to go hike in the mountains. Trails are usually open until mid November. Downtown Denver has great nightlife. Sadly, BBQ is lacking (except at my house).

I’d forget about Savannah. It’s nice, but not a lot to do there.
How about Charleston or Nashville as considerations? Both have more to offer than Savannah.
I’ve not been to Austin, but I’ve never heard a bad thing about it.
Denver has much to offer as well.

Looks like there are 4 ADs in Denver, hehe. Still dreaming about that day where I walk into a random AD and pick up a "hard to get" SS model

We were in Denver in May. Good hiking areas, restaurants and lots to do. Weather is unpredictable.

We were in Austin last year for a week. Great food, lots of cool restaurants. Pretty spread out though. Generally had to drive a good deal to get anywhere. Weather will be better.

Both are nice places.

Yep, weather is horrible. COOOLLLDD all year long. 4 foot snowdrifts in June. Nobody move here.

Honestly, you will not find a place with more pleasant weather than Denver. October is usually very reliable. Cool, crisp and dry.

I lived in Austin for 8 years and it is a great place in October as well.

Let me know if you select Denver and I will give you some personal recommendations and may even meet ya'll for a drink or two.

We got a bad week. 2 golf tourneys in full rain gear, hats and gloves. I think it was 42 degrees and raining sideways day two of the tourney. I say unpredictable because it wasn’t forecasted until the day before we got there. It did get nice the day we left lol.

Denver is great, but the end of October is a little too risky for me.
Austin is a fun place and the Longhorns will be out of town then.
Savannah is a wonderful place to visit and the weather should be nice.

We did Austin and Charleston (not Savanah) this year, Denver a multitude of times.

They all have their own charm. Charleston has great food and culture/history. Denver is best for the outdoors enthusiast. Austin meets them in the middle. October would be fantastic there. We liked the South Congress area, The "six" was dumpy. Surprisingly great seafood/sushi. The restaurant scene was a real highlight.

From that list Denver or Austin. Both cities have a fitness seekers, youthful vibe to them. Being a Texan I’ve spent a lot more time in Austin. Tons of nightlife and restaurants, also lots of fun places to hike, bike, rock climb, etc. Avoid the F1 weekend unless you’re going to it as hotels will be near capacity and expensive as will be the whole downtown scene.
