Has your trade or sell activity been reduced by current Sport model Shortage
My AD had been very good to me, my problem has been that everything is hot so you do not want to trade or sell your current models because you know they are going up in price and then you have no discount on the new models even the DJs
Like I would love to pick up a DJ 41 on the cheap, but i can't get a decent discount.....then I need to save my powder for the big guns, so it just keeps you on the sidelines. I have just decided to buy one watch a year instead of two watches and or trades, so yes it has dampened my interest but not killed it. That said Rolex is killing it with the new models, the best stuff they have come up with in years. |

I think the shortage affects us all more than some of us even want to believe. I haven’t really given it too much thought, but I can tell you that I’ve really tried to settle down and direct my focus to acquiring watches that are lifelong keepers. I don’t know if it’s a phase, or a common milestone on a collectors journey, but it has roughly coincided with beginning of the shortage.

I agree. If it’s as easy as driving to an AD and buying another watch, trading one away is easier to do. When you know you may have great difficulty replacing it rarely makes you think twice. And that’s not a bad thing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Not really. I tend to pursue the watches I want, but to be honest, have just reached the law of diminishing returns with Rolex.
Not to mention Tudor is cranking out some crazy nice watches that you actually don't have to play silly games to get. |

No can’t say it has. I keep buying watches I like and then wear and enjoy them so life as usual.

It seems by reading various “I bought this on a whim” statements in threads in seems the shortage is, for obvious reasons, leading to a buy first and then decide if it’s the right watch for the purchasing individual. This works since the shortage also makes the hot references very liquid and sometimes profitable. The irony is that many people think the shortage is Rolex’s way to squeeze the greys but if consumers feel like they have to buy first and decide later it lends itself to more inventory for greys. Well maybe less absolute inventory but faster turnover and higher margins.

Yes. I bought my Hulk in 2010. Loved it in the beginning but I think i used it once the last 2 years so i could part with it. Normaly i would have flipped it for a new watch but due to the current price development with this model i'll hold on to it.

The only change is the longer wait for something I want. I've come to a point, similar to Chadri where I buy what I intend to be lifelong keepers.

Nope. No change at all. I don't "collect" Rolex so I only have what I wear. Over the last two years I have bought exactly what I wanted when I was ready from both AD's and grey dealers. By far, the best way to go is grey. I have had FANTASTIC experience with DavidSW.
I currently own a subc and an exp II polar. I have exorcised the date magnifier which I hate. Great fun putting a torch to it and popping it off. |
