Undoubtedly an age old debate
Hey guys, long time reader, first-time poster:
I’ve been anxious to buy my first Rolex for a long time now and, I think I’m finally approaching go time. I’d say I’m 95% set on Explorer I and I absolutely love that watch. However I also happen to love the 39mm OP and the smooth-bezel DJ with the black dial. To make the decision even harder, Rolex appears to have stepped up marketing for the OP the last couple of weeks on social media lol Anyone want to weigh in with opinions to help me tip the scales one way or the other?? This will likely be my sole every-day watch for the foreseeable future so the decision hasn’t been super easy to make! Thanks in advance! |

Go for the Explorer I, it has a better clasp with the Oysterlock

Of those that you're considering, I'd go with the Explorer.
Can't really go wrong though, could you.

To me the choice between Exp and OP39-black is quite clear: Exp for its versatility and better clasp.
The choice between Exp and OP39-white is much harder, that white clean dial is really nice. Disclaimer: I am Exp owner and I love it... |

No bad choices there. An important question - is a date important to you? If yes, the answer is clear, DJ41, however, if you can live w/out it, I agree with most, the Exp 1 is a winner, and will have the benefit of holding its value, even increasing long term.

If you think you will need date functionality, go for DJ.
Otherwise, Exp1, unless you want some color in your dial.

Thank you, everyone! Your responses appear to confirm what I’ve been obsessing over for many months! I’m super excited.
Also, explorers hold value better than the rest? This is a tidbit I didn’t know |

I am in the same boat and will choose the Explorer. The main reason is that the Explorer really sings to me, while the OP only hums, but if both were equal, I would choose Explorer for the better clasp.

Depends on if you want date or not
The color options and the date complication make the DJ Amy choice hands down. It’s also a more popular option I would go to anAD, youshould be able to find those models and be able to try them on then finally wear what speaks to you the most! Best of luck

I guess if I were you I'll think about whether I need the date function.
If not, I'll go with Exp 39. Good luck! Sam

Welcome to TRF! The Explorer (39mm MK II) has the advantage of a locking clasp, easy link 5mm extension and a spectacular lume from the dial, plus it's a classic design. The black OP39 is also very nice and perhaps a bit more dressy. Take your time and go with what speaks to you. Good luck & Cheers!

Explorer I for me. Clasp as others have said, and the classic understated look is what I went for.

Have you tried any of them on?
I’d go Explorer I, but you’ll never know for sure until you try them on. |

I admittedly have not tried any of them on yet, but I’m dying to get to an AD. But I think barring any crazy changes of heart it’s gonna have be the explorer. There’s really no downside, because I’m not worried about the date and I want the clasp
And dial color must be black! |
