Incoming! Black dial, new movement, and a consolidation to the Rolex essentials
What have we here? Yesterday was a long morning waiting for the FedEx truck to rumble up the road...
Ahh. Beautiful...even more than I expected, seeing it in metal for the first time... The long debates between the sunburst black and blue proved worthwhile, and left me satisfied with my choice. I knew I had to be, as two excellent and very appealing pieces (to me) were sacrificed to make this *one* a reality. Before continuing, brief tribute to the departed seems in order: the Tudor Sub went way back for me to my late teens, and the 114300 Oyster Perpetual in the seldom-seen Red Grape dial was EASILY one of the most satisfying time-only Rolex watches I've had the pleasure to wear...an Explorer 1 with an elegant but slightly flamboyant attitude if you will. May their new owners enjoy them as much as I did! But consolidate I did, and here we are: Lots of plastic removal ahead!...a ritual of welcoming a new Rolex watch to my wrist that I've been through far too many times (the dreaded Flipitus Syndrome") over the past 8-10 years, but it never fails to be satisfying! Bit by bit, the ubiquitous Rolex Oyster (insert your favorite model) begins to become "yours" Fully exposed, sized, and a new EDC Rolex relationship begins. Heading out later to meet with some fellow watch nerds and celebrate our enjoyment of horology, with a particular passion for Rolex... 5 and 6 digits all play amicably at this table, and cool, Bauhaus-inspired German horology is welcome as well! I really love this Datejust 41, and feel it synthesizes the best aspects of many of the various 4, 5, and 6 digit Rolex pieces (both Pro and non-Pro) I've had. The dial is incredibly multifaceted, and is both subtle and tremendously expressive in various lighting, all while being instantly legible like a true sports watch should. Add to that Rolex's superb quality of case and bracelet engineering--as a long time Oyster bracelet user, the new Jubilee is absolutely wonderful in its refined strength--and a future superstar Rolex movement (3235) and I feel it's an absolute winner, at least for me, the archetypal somewhat jaded watch guy who's long been on that quest for a go-everywhere, wear-all-the-time, classic companion that still packs some serious horological content from the inside out. |

Cheers! Others at the table weren’t mine, just to be clear...two buddies were along to chat about watches with me. Seeing the 16710 made me really miss mine from years ago, however! The Nomos, which was owned by the other friend (who’s daily is that 114060) is quite compelling: not quite A. Lange or even Glashutte Original in terms of filagree...but still very charming manufacture German watchmaking, and damn nice for the price point!

I didn't realise the black was sunburst either...
I was going to get one in blue... but that black is stunning! Personally for myself I would prefer the fluted bezel, but the SS bezel does make it more casual wear. Was that what you were going for? Congrats either way! It's fantastic! |

The Rolex fluted bezel is—without doubt—a thing of resplendent beauty, but it’s too much for me personally in the context of what I’m seeking to accomplish with this piece: an all day, every day, daily. The 18k laser-cut ridges are a bit TOO much of a good thing, although in a yellow, rose gold, or two-tone piece I grant I would likely opt for it...as these have a very fundamentally opulent look to begin with due to their Midas golden luster. But in stainless steel—with that polished smooth bezel— you are inevitably drawn to the incredibly sleek lines of the classic Oyster case, the sloping bezel line that reflects light in a seductive way, all beautifully complimenting the gleam of the Jubilee center links without overpowering. Contemporary. Sleek. Subtly luxurious without any metallic histrionics. YMMV, as they say, but this combo of material, dial, and bezel floats my individualistic boat to a tee. (The fact I “save” $2,000 bucks —a truly obscene surcharge, although perfectly in line with luxury item sensibilities—is just an added bonus! Ha) |

Congrats! I'd say you did very well with that one, do love the dial a lot too. I just got my new DJ41 almost 3 weeks ago, first one in 25 yrs. It's the cherry on top of my modest collection and current Rolex number 4 Enjoy, it looks great on you.
