Would you rather - Omega Speedmaster vs. Tudor Black Bay

I am trying to decide whether I should flip my Tudor Black Bay (red bezel) and pick up a hesalite Moonwatch on a black leather strap (bracelet doesnt fit quite right, and I want a watch I can play around with straps). I recently posted about selling the Tudor to help fund the OP39 in white, but the Speedmaster has been of interest for quite a while and selling the Black Bay would take care of most of the cost (not quite there for the OP39, and I genuinely like both watches so plan to get both eventually).

Speedmaster always. I had the red bezel, it was a much thicker and bigger watch than I expected. Check out the Omega Broad Arrow Auto Chrono, still some NIB, 3313 movement, 1957, same foot print as Speedy pro, but auto and sapphire, black of course

Save up for the op in white, and call it a day.

Well I tell ya what and I’m probably going to get blasted for this but I’m not really a huge speedy fan. I’ve had one and absolutely loved winding it every morning but it was just a little boring for me. I know it’s a pure “ tool watch “ and whatnot but the lack of applied indices made it a little blah. I realize that the dial should be a little plainish because that’s the type of watch and it’s a good price for a cool historically relevant mechanical chronograph. Just wasn’t for me I guess. That being said I’m not really a black bay fan either but an op? Love it !

Interesting that you say that, last year I couldn't decide between the Submariner 114060 and the Speedy, and decided to save a bit more for the Sub. I feel like I already made the "save a bit more and get what you want" purchase, and if I keep working hard I plan to have a nice 4-5 watch collection over the next few years. The Speedy is on the list, so why not now? Thank you for the reply!

I always scratch my head when someone can't decide between a chronograph and a diver.

Of course, I guess if one doesn't dive, it hardly matters relative to water resistance, but the two watches are so different and designed for two very different needs.

There's nothing wrong with the Tudor, in fact, its a beautiful watch at just the right size, but the Speedmaster has one advantage over the Tudor and that is its authentic pedigree.

Only you can answer that question.
The Speedy pro hesalite is the pick of the classic chrono's as far as i'm concerned.
If one is into chrono's then there is arguably not another more versatile watch on the market with endless strap options open to you.

Honestly, I don't dive, or time races. I time parking meter times, and maybe how long it takes to get from point a to b on occasion.

The comparison for me is that both are sporty watches on a leather strap, and I would wear either one with similar attire, thus I don't need or want both in my small collection.

Who would wear a Tudor Black Bay on a leather strap for diving anyways? lol

I appreciate the input!

The strap versatility is definitely part of the appeal, I don't have a huge budget for watches so this helps to keep it interesting without dropping a ton of cash.

If you've never had a mechanical chrono before, Speedy all the way. It's affordable and I like it a bit better than the typical 7750 movement.

Well, strap versatility would allow you to swap out for a rubber strap, if the need arose.

Precise timing is not limited to motor sports.

I had both of those watches in my collection together once, and I would definitely say Speedy Pro. It's so much more beautiful IMO, and it looked great on any strap.

This is a bad Apples to Oranges comparison since the Speedy is a chrono and the Tudor Black Bay is a diver watch.

Perhaps compare the Tudor Black Bay to a Planet Ocean or Speedy with Daytona/Royal Oak Chrono?

Thank for the reply. As I mentioned above, I don't dive with a dive watch (I have a Seiko SKX007 I use in the pool and on vacation) and to me, they are similar in the sense that they are a sporty watch on a leather strap.

Not "comparing" but looking to replace one with the other if that makes sense.

I already have a Submariner, and a sporty watch on a leather strap fulfills a want in my collection. The BB was an impulse buy and I will make about $700 if I sell it. It's a fun watch but my goal is to build a 4-5 piece collection that covers all the bases in terms of my wardrobe and not the tool/function element.

I should mention that my only 3 watches are the Tudor BB / Sub 114060 / Seiko SKX007 and I don't even consider myself a diver guy, just ended up with these on the way.

Speedmaster would be my choice, but both are excellent of course, there is no wrong choice.

Thanks for filling in the back story.

In light of this new information, it would seem the most logical choice would be to say goodbye to the Tudor and send it to a home where it's more cherished.
You already have the Rolex and Seiko.

If you already have a Sub and a Seiko, I would go for the speedy! Adds a variety in the collection (with the choices of straps too!)

I have both and the Black Bay is an easy daily wear. The sapphire crystal doesn't scratch and it barely looks worn after multiple desk diving incidents. The speedy is much more sensitive to dings, dents, and scratches. Just something to consider.

Both great watches and if you can find a way to swing both I'd say thats the way to go

Tudor is a poor man's rolex IMHO. Go for the Omega, it's really iconic

No way.

Tudor is tudor. They are fantastic on their own and different entirely from Rolex from their cases, their bracelets, their brushwork and finishing. Also their movements, dials hands and bezels.

This is not a case of Skoda vs Audi.

No hate here but I really detest hearing that Tudor is a poor mans rolex. It’s still a very expensive watch relatively speaking.

For me, speedy heselite on leather trumps the Tudor.

It even trumps the BB58 on bracelet but only just! Consequently I could live contently with a 58 on bracelet and a speedy pro heselite on leather as the perfect combo for life.

I agree - I messed my heselite up within a week of buying but it just becomes characterful after a while. Love the watch
