Do you compromise or wait for "your" perfect model?

My wife is about to offer me my first Rolex for my birthday.
I have visited a few AD in London and it is very difficult to get the exact model you wish.
So I was wondering if you guys are willing to "compromise" when buying a Rolex such as:

- the blue dial would be your first choice but they only have it available in black which would normally be your second choice. You take the black available or you wait for the blue?
- you would prefer fluted bezel but you can do with smooth bezel and save £1500. You wait to have the money available or you compromise and chose the cheaper option (which you still like but slightly less)
- the AD have your perfect combination in size 36, which is fine on your wrist, but if you could choose, you'll go for the 41. You leave with the 36 or you wait for the 41.
.....etc....etc....

So do you compromise with a version you still like very much or you wait (money or time) for the "perfect" Rolex?

I have also noticed that 6 months ago I would have chosen a black dial and I now prefer the blue one or even Rhodium. Things change when you are a novice (as mentioned, I dont own a Rolex yet).

you wait or pay up. The money difference will be forgotten over time. The annoyance of looking at an expensive item that has the wrong color will always bother you.

I'll be completely honest with you. DO NOT compromise on the model/configuration you want. That will ultimately end in a flip and you losing money.

Done it many times my man. I could have probably bought 2 extra watches if I didnt flip any.

^ This. Words of wisdom that many of us have learned the hard way. Wait it out and get what you want.

I completely understand your advice NOT to compromise.
However, I am talking about very little compromise. For example, I really like the DJ in black BUT I slightly prefer in blue.
Worth to compromise or it's still a NO NO wait for your number one choice (even if your second choice is very close)?

Sounds like I am willing to compromise a little bit (for a model I still like very much) but I dont know if it's a mistake and I will regret it.

I am editing this message as I have seen your answers and it's pretty clear it's better to wait for my dream combo.

Problem is, as a novice, I am not even sure what is the combination I prefer. It changes almost everyday, especially since spending time on this forum and reading or looking at pictures! So exciting to choose and a bit annoying!

I've compromised before and then regretted it. I only buy what I really want now.

If you would be happy with either one then be honest with yourself.

I would have been happy with either 5711 but a white dial was available so I bought that.

If you really want the blue then wait.

Good luck!

Never " compromise " since there's a good chance you won't be happy with what you got.

Be patient and get exactly what your heart desires!!!

Good luck with your choice!!

Maybe this waiting is a “feature not a bug” for you. If it’s really a question of fluted bezel or not, even though it may not be the right size or dial, you can still figure out if you really want the flutes or not with the other watches all around to see. Plus I’m sure a gray in London has the exact watch to try on in person even if you don’t intend to buy yet.

Anyways, the combination that you’re looking for does not seem difficult to come by if you search a bit harder. Or go to the US to get it.

Don’t compromise, you’ll always wonder.... would I have liked X watch better, or X color better. JMO

I only buy what I want, I don't think you should ever compromise when it comes to luxury goods.

I also learned the hard way and compromised in the past. Regret it and cost me more money at the end. I should of waited and get what I love at the beginning. Learn to be patient. Its sweeter that way and you will enjoy your watch more knowing it took longer to get it.

I'd wait. A blue DJ with fluted bezel isn't that hard to come by.

If it was something like waiting for the new Pepsi, I might look elsewhere.

It's a lot of money to compromise. Might as well wait until you get the one you'll love.

Wait it out.

If you have that itch for a specific model, it won't go away when you get a different model.

Still waiting for my 126710 Pepsi. It's frustrating to see all the forum members receiving theirs, but I keep telling myself any day now!

What is the exact combination you are after then?

First off due to the demand in London I’d start searching outside the M25, have any these AD’s not offered to look on their systems to see if other location have the exact combo you want?

And echo the above buy the one you want a comprise could cost you more in the long run!

Wait. Make sure you know what you want. Then wait some more, to make sure you don't find something you want more.

Happy birthday.

Wait for your desired combination, as stated above doubt if a blue DJ will take much more than a couple of weeks.

I almost compromised when I bought my DJ 41, and I’m so glad that I didn’t. I really wanted the smooth bezel and oyster bracelet, but all I could find was the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet. I almost compromised and bought one at an AD in San Jose, but instead placed my name on the list, and less than three weeks later I had the exact watch that I truly wanted. As soon as I opened the box I knew I had made the right choice, I knew that I would never have been as happy compromising as I am with getting exactly what I wanted in the first place.

This.

It sounds like the OP should spend some more time to ensure that he is clear about what he wants. And then buy that exact piece with no compromises

Wait it out. Been down this road many times. Even with the great value retention of Rolex, you will still take a bath when you trade in what you bought for what you actually want. Patience will pay off.

I always get exactly the model I want. If you pay this amount for something you completely don't like, it'll be worthless
