Vintage Maxi Dials??

I thought maxi dials were only to be found on the 16610 LV and six digit refs..

But I was window shopping at a vintage Rolex shop today and was surprised to see no shortage of maxi dial subs from the early 80s.

Confused now?

Some matte maxi dials from 80 ish to 83/84. Pre gold surround dials. Some of my favorite Subs come from that era. Somewhat the end of a 30 year run of basically the same watch.

The Maxi dial appellation began with the no-date subs around 1978.

Oh right, was thinking maxi dial was a newish thing for six digits or the LV but it’s actually a throw back to late 4 digits..

I wonder why they parked the maxi dials when the five digits came out?

Sorry no, I only dared to take the one shot as I was worried they may have thought I was up to some arbitrage shenanigans.

You can see the full collection here though. It’s pretty impressive.

Oh yeah, no surround! I’ve not closely looked at a four digit before. Thanks.

Yes. Partly why haven’t looked too closely! Haha.

Would like to see them do a new sub with thinner lugs and a nice plexiglass crystal. That would be on my wish-list.

Great article thanks! The hour hand on those Royal Navy MilSubs remind me a bit of the hour hand on the Grand Seiko Divers. Or rather the GS divers hour hand appears to be a mix of RN MilSub and Mercedes.

I wonder how much the RN subs go for..

The maxi sub from 1981 has a long five insert, I thought were for earlier 60s-70s watches. Does anybody have a guess when the long fives where made from rolex

They have a fantastic collection, too bad that is all that can be said about these guys. Prices and friendliness are terrible.
