Submariner purple dial

I've noticed that the 90's Submariner purple dials have gone up in value. I'm looking at getting one again but I'm also looking at a beautiful GMT 16753 with a "nipple dial" and nice "moon dust" on the dial as as well. Which one would be the better investment piece??

Ok, I’ll go first.....neither. Watches are terrible investments.

Edit: buy either one if you like it.

I had a Rolex Daytona "big red" and I bought it for $32k in 2013 and now they are worth north of $70k. Isn't that a great investment?

Can you retire and live the rest of your life off that money? If the answer is no, well then it is not that great of an investment sorry to say.

What?!?! As an investment broker I'd say, yes, that is a pretty good investment - an overall return of 118.75% (20.08% annualized 2013 thru today).

Most investors are not fortunate enough to find one single investment that let's them retire off of.

+1. People are listing them for this and I think they are only selling to Dubai’s oil kids in my opinion.

If I may add my 2 cents, while I agree with the general sentiment about watches not being good investments, one's portfolio may consist of different types of assets. An appreciating asset can form a small part of it, with fun as dividend.

Is that repeatable? I disagree with the "can you live off that" comment, but in all seriousness how often does that happen? Sure, I have a pristine 500C that I could make nearly 50% to a grey, better if I tried to sell outright. My BLRO would net out, what...30%, pretty easy. Again, not common and not a great strategy. This is also, in my opinion very temporal - The watch hotness hasn't always been "The Thing" and I personally don't see this running as is for more than a couple years.

This is definitely not true for rare vintage Rolex, they are a fantastic investment.

As others have said buying a watch for investment purposes will mean that you'll never truly enjoy it and will always be monitoring the prices. I too like the purple dials but at this point they are only marginally higher than their SS sub brothers (16610). It seems that whatever you choose having a complete set without being over polished will lead to the greatest return down the road should you choose to sell.

I'd look elsewhere for an investment watch. Not only is TT typically not a good investment , the age of these watches usually put them in the non-gold through the buckle clasps, which is a war stopper for me...

Look up Rolex Submariner purple dial on eBay. The blue dials on some faded to a purple hue and they look amazing!

Certain blue dials fade to purple. I buy my watches because they call to me. Then I wear the hell out of them. Some have gone up in value and some haven’t. But then for what you like, not for what you think they might be worth. Just my .02

If you owned a 1680 red or DRSD, you would not "wear the hell" out of it. I guess you don't own anything rare.

A purple dial is a classic Bluesy that color shifts in certain light to a purple hue. Early 90‘s dials did this over time. I probably owned one of finest examples of these as I purchased it from new and traded it after a 20+ years. Then watch condition spoke for itself and what determined the value and not so much the color of the dial.

Same watch.

Its funny today things like paint defects that change the original colour have made some Rolex collectable to those willing to pay.Now there was a few black dialled S, N, T and W serial Daytona's Tiffany and Co, or Cartier dialled 16520 ,which had the same manufacturing defect. The colour of the sub-dials faded to brown or like a chocolate colour these can command silly money in today's collectors. Its very similar to the defect from the late 1980s early 1990s that turned the TT Blue Subs dial more of a purple blue colour, but for some reason those are not so collectable, but IMHO looks much better than the other defect dial some go crazy over today.

I would really like the thought that my watch will age to purple like that. Maybe one could keep it under a UV lamp when it's not in use, I wonder how long it would take?

Wow, that blue to purple fade is beautiful.

Hey Rolex, if you're thinking of a new model, create a TT Sub "Bluesy" with a purple dial.

At least I can wear my spectacular Submariner "red" with ghost bezel! Can't say the same for my shitty GE stock!

Great watch! My sub is 1991 with the same purple dial is the crystal on your watch sapphire or acrylic? I ask as I was told just today by watchdinder the crystal should be sapphire and mine is acrylic, however from searching online it seems most subs until the early 90s crystal is acrylic rather than sapphire
