Billing Scam

I looked at my online bank statement this morning and there was a charge from "AT&T" for over $200.

I have no affiliation with AT&T, so I did a Google search on the the data and found this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=3336...nt=firefox-b-1

I've already got a new card. Now I have to go to all my online sites and change the card number, so I can pay my bills and have my automatic billing work as they should.

Be careful and monitor your bank statements.

As my banker said this morning, "T'is the season...."

I just do a lot of online shopping.

With all the security breaches and phishing emails that I get, it's a wonder it hasn't happened before.

Man, there seems to be no shortage of these scams out there. I REALLY hope they can catch up to whom ever is responsible. Either way, I'm glad you caught this when you did, Grady.

Thanks for the alert, Grady.

Also heard on the news today about a data breach from Marriott, so another reason to be wary about unauthorized charges.

We have fraudulent charges at least once a year. It’s a pain in the ass.
Once they tried to say that the charge, an IPad from Kansas, was not fraudulent as it was supposedly paid with a swipe at the store. They sent me the signature which looked like a chevron.
Needless to say that a call fixed that. Very thorough investigation there...
We’ve never been to Kansas, don’t live anywhere Kansas, and don’t sign with a curved line.
That annoyed me more than anything else about the fiasco.

We recently had some fraudulent charges in our checking account from "Amazon"

Long story short, somehow the debit card in my wifes name which she has never used and was in a drawer at home, had two charges against it from "Amazon" services.

It got sorted but that was crazy. We did not activate the replacement card.

This happened to me some months ago, i was quick to notice the fraudulent act and follow it up immediately. We all need to be on guard against these dubious people.

The authorities almost never catch these people. They aren't smart, but they are clever, and trails usually end once that card number is closed. It takes a lot (I mean A LOT) of forensic data to get enough evidence to track them down. It's definitely not like in the movies where "good hackers" can just trace false transactions back to the individuals. Plus, a lot of it originates overseas, and they sell info to the users.

I'm no hacker, I can barely update my computer from Windows 8 to Windows 10, but I've got friends that are Certified Ethical Hackers and network security specialists, and I got to be a fly on the wall one day when they were discussing it. It was a lot like the Charlie Brown teacher speaking jibberish, but I caught enough to get the gist of what was being said...

Plus, there is so little incentive for the cops to go after them because it's hard to prove. It really has to be a slam dunk and pretty much handed to them on a silver platter.

Sorry to hear that Grady.
Given the choice you should always use “credit” over “debit”.
And if you haven’t done so already, set up alerts on your bank accounts and credit/debit cards to receive an email or text alert whenever there’s any activity.
Better to catch it sooner rather than later. So far this has worked very well for me.

I got a call yesterday from an Indian or Pakistani person claiming they were going to renew my subscription to Windows Defender. I never signed up for this service to begin with so I told him to cancel it. Then he wanted to take control of my computer (I assume to download my passwords and other personal info). I told him I would not allow that. He then hung up on me. Foiled another scammer.

BTW, AMEX is the best when dealing with fraudulent charges. Any charge that comes through on my cc I receive instant notification from. Still, usually have an incident or two per year.

I use my CC a lot and also do a lot of online buying. I get hacked about once every other year. Its about a 4 hour process every time this happens to re-establish all my accounts with the new card and is a royal PITA.

I have 2 cards total for my entire life and I am now older. One card is our main card and used for literally everything and tied to all automatic billing. The second card never gets used at all unless our 1st card is hacked and then its used till our main card is back up and running and then paid right off.

Well 6 months ago my main card got hacked again (I was about due as its been a few years) and when I went to use my secondary card I found a recent bogus charge on it also. This second CC card hasnt been used in at least 2 years. So the only way that info was out there was if a credit agency or credit card company got hacked and my information was compromised.

You would think during these breaches they would re issue all the CC to prevent this theft.

The phishing emails and phone calls are getting ridiculous. Microsoft calling to tell you your subscription to Windows is expiring and your computer will shutdown unless you call us back at such and such a number. Well since the first call occured almost three months ago and now it almost occurs at least once a week I’m thinking it might be a scam. LOL Actually I knew from the start it was a scam.

I get at least an email now once a week that tells me to click on a link if the Apple charge is false. I get at least three others trying to get me to do the same for other things like PayPal. Whenever I’m in doubt I go directly to the site and I don’t click on their link to get there to check things out. You really have to pay attention to what you do.

I manually plug in my credit card for online bills for whichever ones allow which reduces the chances I”Lloyd miss updating card info. I monitor my accounts religiously.

Link your CCs to your phone. I had a fraudulent charge on my Amex on Thanksgiving day and it popped up as an alert on my notifications. $475 on Instacart (online grocery deliveries) in California, umm negative. Amex reversed the charge in 5 minutes and had a new card in the mail the next day.
