Better Without Waiting Lists ?

Would the system work better if ADs did not take names down?
Instead when a watch comes in it goes into the window for a first come first served policy.

This would make the chase more exciting for people who are after a piece but on the flip side greys could employ scouts to suck them up first.
Keeping the card for 12m assists with the greys sucking them up to some degree

Thoughts ?

I don't like the idea as I don't have the time during the day to devote to "the chase". When I retire, it would be an entirely different story!

AD’s would never do it - they will look after their long standing customers first like most businesses would do.

My nearest AD is a 40 minute drive away. I am glad my collection was completed before the madness of waiting lists, grey dealer prices, and PM purchases to get a SS watches became common practice. I do not envy anyone these days who has their mind set on a watch they cannot get. I feel I would go pre owned from a trusted seller if I was put in this position.

I don’t have time to wait 365 days outside a AD window.
A ridiculous idea IMO.

I completely agree. Sitting outside an AD sipping coffees and Redbulls waiting all day, or dropping in daily in hopes the moon and stars align would be absurd and unreasonable for any self respecting responsible adult in society. My son for example gets a kick out of going to Game Stop everyday looking for special edition toys.

Most people that are able to afford a Rolex have real careers and families, which in my case leaves me indisposed. I would never be able to purchase anything except on vacation. Also, most ADs do value loyal customers and make money from much more than watches so this would hurt them also.
Two thumbs down for me.

If I lived opposite my AD, or worked next door, and had enough time to scan their window every day, I still wouldn't be in favour of this, because whoever lived closest or worked nearby could buy and gouge regularly.

There are wait lists because demand is greater than supply on some models. This has not always been the case and is not presently the case with some models and other brands.

There are a fair few ADs south of UK that have this practice. I happened to be away on business down south and by chance managed to land myself a SubC date earlier this year :)

Two big ADs here in manhattan both said they would not put names on a waiting list for the most recent big release.

The watches are still not finding their way into the window... and I am sure someone is getting a phone call. It’s disgusting.

why dont rolex introduce a membership system. only rolex members will be assigned to Express queue for hot models whereas ordinary people go to the wishlist.

I’m just short of 1.5 hrs to my closet (geographically) AD and 6 hrs outright best, including a 2 hr flight to my preferred AD. I’d never be able to buy another watch

I think a better system would be selling Rolex watches from the company website. Pay in full and wait. Rolex fills the orders as they have been received and can monitor the shipping address and other important information to ensure no multiple orders for the same watch, ie. Daytona Ceramic, come from the same person until all of the demand has been met.

I have been fortunate enough to acquire most of the desireables before the change to scarcity of the sports Rolex watches. I have a few more I would like to acquire but the ones I want are more readily available, with the exception of the new pepsi.

iPhone sell like this, then the hot models all go to grey dealers.

that's an obvious one. why would an AD put the watch on the case and let anyone get it, when they can sell it equally fast to their loyal customers???

unless you think ADs care about "making the chase more exciting for people"

Agreed. And, as a customer, I would expect exactly that.

There’s no incentive for ADs to do that; so no, it would not work.

I think you will have grey dealers pay some young kids to stand/stalk in front of AD windows ready to pounce on any hot SS models that get displayed.

"kids" will either pay for the hot SS models right then and there or call the grey dealers.

Its like when they used to pay for people to stand in line to buy concert tickets (for those that remember those days)

The OP suggested idea would take away the value system for long term, repeat, vip buyers of the brand with an AD.

New comers to Rolex and greys will continue to compete for hot models and that will change with market conditions and the economy. FCFS models are a mess in other arenas where a product has high demand. Sneakers being the first that comes to mind.

As you say, they would be hoovered up by resellers long before most people got a look in !

I would agree. Six months ago I spoke to my AD whom I've bought from for many years about getting a white dial Daytona and she said even if it took 5 years, she would try to get one for me.

I got the call last week, paid MSRP (no premium).
