Which AP to add?

Hi

I am considering getting a Royal Oak next but am undecided as to which reference to add as whilst I like the 15202 it wears quite large (almost borderline for my 6.75 wrist) and the size combined with the many reflecting surfaces makes it almost feel a bit flashy to me and hence I am also considering a 14790 as it’s an elegant watch in that size but downside of that is that I prefer to buy something new and 14790 feels just a tiny bit small and obviously it’s not the size of the original (I don’t like the 15450 due to its thickness).

For reference, current collection consists of PP 5167, Vacheron 47101 in yellow gold, Rolex GMT II and a speedmaster (vacheron and PP gets almost all the wrist time these days)

Appreciate your thoughts!

Erik

I think a 15202 should wear very well on your wrist.

It does fit well but quite big (maybe I’m getting too used with the nimble 5167 and 37mm VC) and part of the thinking is that if it’s a bit more on the elegant side it will be more likely I use it alongside the aquanaut and the vacheron as my Rolex is currently not getting much time as too similar (steel sport) but not as amazing as the aquanaut and whilst I like to have a few watches I don’t want to have ones lying around not used just for the sake of collecting.

Will try and find some old pictures with 15202 and 14790 respectively

Below some photos of 15202 and 14790 on my wrist but note these are for size reference only, I would look to get the watch in steel with blue dial irrespective of what reference I go for

I would suggest to reconsider the 15450. I haven’t had any issue with the thickness; it slides under any cuff, sweatshirt, jacket, etc. with ease. And that’s after wearing my PP perpetual for over a year straight.

It’ll be easier to source than a 15202, the movement is more durable for daily wear, it’s so comfortable I honestly forget its there sometimes, and it doesn’t get in the way during any usual daily activities. Plus you can find one new pretty easily if that’s what you desire.

It's not so much a question of the thickness being a concern from a "convenience" perspective in daily life but rather I just feel it's disproportionate when looking at it from the side (have tried it quite a few times) and since having the aquanaut I've really gained an appreciation for thin watches. Having said that, doesn't hurt to try another time since I'm not in any particular rush!

I really don’t get why people feel that the 15450 is disproportionate. The proportions are right on in my opinion. And the case is relatively thin at 9.8mm.

Give it another try.

Here's a comparison for you comparing my aquanaut and jumbo on my 6.5 inch wrist, the 15202 pic is taken a bit closer so appears a bit larger relative

thanks - very helpful and seeing them like that they look like two watches which complement each other very well.

Appreciate the view, as said before maybe I should give it one more try before making a final decision.

Obviously everyone has their own opinion, but to me, that 15202 looks amazing on your wrist.

15202 any day of the week. 15400 is way too big and as you said, I also find it’s proportions are off.

The 15202 in the first photo seems to fit you well.

As another reference point, here’s my old 5167 and current 15450. 6.5” wrist

Having had the 5167, the 15450 was the only model in the AP line that gave a similar feeling of “right” proportion on my wrist (and visually).

The 15450 is a beautiful extremely wearable AP which sells for half the price of the 15202 and has none of the quirky movement hassles. In addition it is available with a lot of dial color variations and has a screw down crown for better water resistance.

I agree that the 15202 looks fantastic on your wrist in the pictures! In regards to the 15450, seems you already have doubt so i really don't think trying it on again will change anything, go with whatever you like best! GOod Luck!

The 15202 looks great! I have one and it fits my 6.5-6.75" wrist perfectly. The 15450 would also be a good option and is a bit cheaper and easier to get. In my opinion, the 14790 looks terrible on your wrist -- it's too small and the proportions are all off. Remember that the Royal Oak was designed to fill up your wrist.

Saw the photos you posted and you can't go wrong with the 15202 as it looks good on your wrist. Definitely go for it! Skip the 15450 and the 15400. 39mm is the sweet spot. I did however picked up the AP Blue Chrono 26331 recently, interesting enough the Chrono, while physically bigger than the 15400, wears smaller than the 15400. Keep us posted!

I went into an AP boutique today. 41mm felt a little big and 37mm too small. Guess I have funny size wrists as I think they look great on everyone else's photos!
