An embarassing question...
I am ashamed to admit that I have no idea what the chronographs do on a watch. I did a Google search but came up empty.
I'm thinking about buying a chrono watch... so I'd like to know what they do Can someone help me out here? |

Simply put: A chronograph timepiece chrono's things! If you push the upper button it ticks off seconds. If you push the bottom button it ticks off everyone. Never push the bottom button!!
With that said, you should stay away from bottoms in every sense!

You can use it to approximate your speed in mph, or use it to calculate productivity in a workplace (i.e. how many copies you make/hour, reports completed, etc. etc. etc.). Other than that, they are just cool to look at!

Download the Daytona screensaver at Rolex.com and watch it, it shows you what the dials do.

Right, for a serious answer, a chronograph function is basically a stopwatch. It'll normally time seconds, minutes and hours for you. Some also work in conjunction with the bezel, such as the Daytona and Omega Speedmaster to give a rough estimate of speed, using what's known as a tachymetre. This will calculate units per hour, so if you work out how long it takes to cover a known distance (say a mile), you can work out the speed from the bezel.
Chronographs are lovely looking watches, and in my opinion, can look both sporty and formal. Hope this helps |

As everybody says, it's basically a stopwatch..
Push the top button, it starts...push it again it stops...push the bottom button and it resets.. But you can do a lot more with it than that.. We have a brief tutorial on reading the Tachymeter bezel and a few others over on our Omega board as that's where it's asked more often.. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=36345

The simple answer is it is basically like a stopwatch. You use it to time something.

I think most people just think there cool to look at and sometimes play with. Not sure how many people would actually use the functions regulaly.

I was attending a series of depositions in which one of the other attorneys asked particularly long winded questions. At some point the boredom got the best of me and I started using the chrono function to time him. After a few such sessions I looked up to see another lawyer doing exactly the same thing! Later, I learned that chronos notwithstanding, pretty much everyone in the room was timing the guy. It's a good thing no one tried holding his breath for the duration of the question. Cheers, Chris

On the daytona for instance when one activates the chronograph (stop watch):
(a) the large second hand is activated (otherwise it is ordinarily stationary at the 12 O'Clock position); (b) the small sub dial for counting minutes is activated, obviously to count minutes; and (c) the small sub dial for counting hours is activated, obviously to count the hours (as may be necessary). The third subdial has nothing to do with the chronometer, it is a second counter and is actually working all the time and tuned to show you the seconds in conjunction with the large minute and hour hand that you ordinarily use to tell the time. Now for your next lesson, do you know what the tachiometer is?

Yup,
It's a tachometer that was made in Germany - measures RPM.
