SD43 Power Reserve Question

Hi All,

I bought an SD 43 several months ago and noticed that the power reserve is much lower than what is typically expected for the movement (I'm seeing about 50-55 hours). I have a couple of questions for the forum:

1) Is there a typical variance that I can expect for the power reserve and what is that variance?

2) Is this a significant enough variance that warrants sending back to Rolex for correction?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Make sure it's wound all the way before checking the reserve. I know, obvious, but 99% of the time someone expresses this concern with a Rolex it isn't being wound fully. Also you may not be moving enough when wearing it to add time to the reserve. Wind it 40 times and let it wind down, see how long you get. If consistently 50 hours then yeah RSC might be in order.

Have you tried fully winding it manually first?

I did test it out after speaking to my AD and wound it 40 times. That is where I got the 50-55 hours. I will test again winding fully but hate the fact that I can't wear it for a couple days!

Put 50 turns into it from a dead stop and the see how long it runs for.
A 10% variation in power reserve on a new watch is highly unusual.
Up to an hour or so of variation is neither here or there and understandable.
Otherwise it sounds like operator error.

Is 50 turns the new standard having regard to the longer power reserve (70 hours) with the new series movements??

I don't know.
It seems reasonable given the OP has tried an attempt or two with 40 turns and getting a 10% variation in power reserve.
With 50 turns(or more) it should be a more conclusive result

Also consider this.
It not inconcievable that one persons 50 turns, could be the equivalent of another persons 45 or another's 55 turns.
But I think I have read here on the forum that the recommendation has gone up from the 40 turns on the 31XX movements to 50 with the 32XX movements. It can't hurt very much anyway

When I picked up my new DJ41 (3255 movement) my AD wound it at least 50 times and said go 40 min. Of course no worries, you cannot over wind it. If it doesn't pick up to at least 70 hrs. I'd send it in. I get @ 72hrs. from 40 winds.

I agree with the advice others give here about winding it, and I'll go one further: give the crown 40-50 full turns in the morning, wear the watch for one day of activity, and then see what happens.

If something actually is wrong, then it wouldn't surprise me if the symptom (limited power being wound into the mainspring by the auto-wind mechanism) becomes worse over time, so if you're unsure about it now, then wait and see if the power reserve seems to continue shrinking over time.

No. I did 40 complete (visual) turns from a dead stop and got 72 hours (dial up) up on a DD40 and SD43. About 2 hours less crown up.
