Datejust: brush links after a while

Hi everyone,

I think I'm going to buy my first Rolex (still have some saving to do...)

I'm interested in a Datejust; I don't particularly like the polished center links on new models. Would it make sense to wait for those links to be scratched (some months?) and then have them brushed? Or changing to brushed is something that should be done right away?

Like you I wasn’t a fan of the polished centre links and case lugs.
I’ve had the watch now for 6 months and honestly I wouldn’t change a thing about it

They are never going to get that scratched. If you wear the watch at work, most of the scratches will be on the clasp and far side of the bracelet. The other links stay pretty good looking if you take decent care of the watch.

If you want it brushed eventually, might as well just do it up front. But it will have consequences if you need warranty service on the watch.

For a daily wearer at work, I would not buy a watch that has polished center links. Fine for a dress watch though. Between the polished bracelets and the Maxi case, I am happy with older models.

He’s talking about brushing the PCLs....of a Datejust. Your post makes no sense.

No sense to you perhaps, which I won't judge you for... Merry Christmas.

Welcome to TRF

Have you considered an Oyster Perpetual? They have brushed bracelets and would be a bit less expensive. They don't have a date complication but you'll learn to memorize the date soon enough.

Consider a DJ model on a jubilee bracelet instead.

It doesn’t really matter whether you brushed them up front or waited until the bracelet gets scratched a bit. A reputable watch maker is going to refinish all the links at once when you get it done. Personally, I would just wear the watch with the PCLs for a while and see how you feel. If the scratches start bothering you, then go ahead and get the bracelet brushed.

There are others members here on the forum that feel the same way. There are a few threads discussing refinishing the PCL's with the brushed look. People have used fine Scotchbrite pads and the final product actually looks pretty nice. For resale, this will most likely be a negative. However, if you plan on keeping the watch, you might consider that option. FYI, this was for the Oyster bracelet PCL's. I've never heard of this being done to a Jubilee.

That's the main question: why would I need to do it upfront?

I'm not that worried about scratches (I have a Tissot with pcl) but I'd like to know my options...

Thank you

Edit: I didn't see kauffee's post before replying
