Rolex Date Just 2 116333 as a sleeper collectors piece, thoughts please.

I believe that the DJ2 because of its limited run, movement, proportions etc will become a future collectors piece.
Of course Box and Papers examples for best bang per buck, that is why I jumped on this two tone diamond dial 116333 (September 2015) piece for AUD11,300 (USD7900).
The champagne diamond dial is such an iconic piece IMHO and looks great with the oyster bracelet.
I usually strongly advocate Rolex sports but I wanted a dressy piece that my wife would love to wear too.
What are you thoughts? Was it a decent buy? Should I have paid a little more for the 126333 with the Jubilee?
Is this model a sleeper? Either way we love it.

As long as you like it and enjoy it, that's all that matters. I do prefer the DJII over others and am glad I bought mine before they were discontinued.

The DJII is a great model. I owned one for a while. Kinda wish I had kept it. As for future value who knows? I’m sure like with all Roelx models it will keep up with inflation. Not sure t will have the potential as other Subs, GMTs and Daytona’s though.

Oh yeah we love it. I am just keen on what other Rolex buyers/collectors etc think.
I formed this opinion on my own and am keen if anyone else sees the value proposition.

Here's a Pic next to my bluesey

I think you need to buy the watch because you like it and want to enjoy it. Not as an investment.

I did buy it because we love it - read the post lol. But I also factored in potential growth prospects due to the models limited run, proportions, movement etc
My question is does any other collectors/ Rolex fans feel the same way.

For potential growth i'd say probably not, DJ watches in particular in the grey market are the most easily obtained. I feel the trend of watch sizing is also going back to smaller watches. Rolex themselves understood this and changed from DJII to DJ41 and same goes for the daydate. I don't think you'll take a wash if you wanted to resell in the future, but you might lose a little bit or get back what you paid. I could be wrong but that's just my 2 cents.

Went smaller for the smaller wrist buyers where most are sold in the world

Limited run doesn't always mean collectible, especially DJ, while TT is even worse, if history tells anything.

Went through my watch paperwork over the festive season...
Bought the DJ II in 2012 at less 25% from a AD
So,if DJs can be found at discount and ss sportys at MRSP,are the value retention of the DJs worse ?
I can make a handy profit on it now,if I wish.

Don't compare MRSP between models, compare actual buying cost.

PMs can be found at healthy discounts even now,are PMs then that expensive ?

Do the sums, but do it right

Not really. Obviously we can't predict some of the crazy stuff that happens with these watches, but using the past as an indicator DJs just aren't super collectible.

I personally, don't think Datejusts will be collectible except for maybe a few exceptions but I can be wrong:) The future will tell.

Great feedback thankyou. Yes it was bought used in great condition, full set at nearly 40% below MSRP. At worst I should be able to get most of my money back if it ever needs to be sold.

I doubt you will ever lose money on it in the future. While maybe not super collectible I think the prices will continue to rise. Even now DJll with box and papers sell for around the same as a DJ41 used box and papers. Less then 1k between them. Most times when less. People with larger wrist will want larger watches. The DJ41 wore like a DJ36 on me. I love the huge bezel and bigger heavier feel. I think the proportions are spot on for a modern Rolex. I don’t think the trend of DJ 36 will be the same for the larger rolexes. 39-41mm will always be the sweet spot for most men going forward imo. Look at the sub and gmt at 40mm.

Historically the only Datejust's that have been collectible are the ones with rare dials, i.e lapis lazuli, onyx etc

Datejusts seem to be the watches which historically have take the biggest hits. Unfortunately I traded my DJII right after the DJ41 came out with the 72 hour reserve and took a big hit on it. That was likely a good time to pick up one at a discount. I did end up with my SD4KC out of the deal so it wasn't all bad. I don't expect the newer movement DJ to reverse the trend of depreciation.

Well in my experience with Rolex watches over the last 40 plus years,I cannot recollect any model DJ becoming or thought of as being collectible, especially anything with diamonds.

I have to agree with the majority here...don't really see it as a future "collector's piece." It seems like most of the serious collectors here (and I'm not one, so not an expert by any means), tend to focus on more of the so-called "sports" series, like the sub, GMT, or Daytona.

However, having said all that, it's a beautiful watch that will always have value, IMO. We tend to gloss over watches that don't cost a small fortune here on TRF, but I would be willing to guess that watch, if left as an inheritance, would open up any non-WIS's eyes when they found out what it was worth.

I started out with a DJ and literally did everything with it. It's a big seller for a reason. Yours is great...enjoy it.

I have had this DJ2 just before they discontinued it, so happy I have this. I just personally like the proportions and size of this over the new smaller one.

I sold two of them without worry of them gaining value. Weren’t the easiest pieces to move either. I liked them, just didn’t work on my wrist.
