15500 affecting 15400 value

Hey,

Thought it might be nice to have a special thread regarding this topic.
What do you guys think? Increase/Decrease?

Are there any similar situations from the past to learn from?

Since 15500 will push MSRP up by around 10%, close to 20k, I won’t see any reason for decrease. Why would it?

What actions are you planning to take - depending on the price direction - if any?

I agree. You also have the differentiation between dials. White/silver is gone and blue/grey look slightly different. The 116500 helped the 116520 dramatically. Not the same but just saying.

It may depend if the Grey dealers decide to play the same game with Rolex Sport models - I.e. Snap up all the ROs while they can and slap a massive premium in anticipation of limited availability from manufacturer.

Greys will always look for a reason to raise prices, never lower, only massive selling pressure will force them to and I don't see that happening here at all.

Doubt it. That one has been for sale for at least a few weeks.

Bottom line, 15500 not wildly superior. So...with no more 15400s being produced, everyone that prefers the look of the 15400s are going after increasingly limited supplies. price=up. Eco 101.

I wouldn’t use Takuya as a average price point. He has always been MUCH higher then other sellers. He does have a good inventory and trusted but your paying up for it.

15500 has some issues IMHO:
1) date window pushed out to the far edge
2) no text on the bottom half of the dial makes it look unbalanced
3) shorter, wider minute markers also though off the dial proportions.

All these things make the 15400 more desirable IMHO.

IMO 1 and 2 are what draw me to the 15500

4) The minute track is now on the outside breaking up the balance of the dial.
5) Thicker case
6) Still 50 M water resistance

The 15500 is like what Rolex did with the DJII.

I like the fatter hands / lume on the 15500. Blue looks darker though. The electric blue of the 400 is hard to top.

Looks like opinions are pretty split on preference for the 15400 vs 15500, which means that values for the 15400 with do just fine. I'd have to see the 15500 in person to make a final decision of which I like better, but my first impression is that I like the 15400's dial layout much better, but the new movement in the 15500 appears to be a significant improvement -- overall, I think I still prefer the 15400.

Also, as a 15400 blue dial owner, $27k+ for one seems a but ridiculous -- I seriously doubt anyone is going to pay that, but I hope they do, as it's good for me if I decide to sell mine!

This is just like every other release. Current owners like their watch and people on the sidelines get excited about the new one

I agree with you. Obvious bias and self interest going on. I prefer the 15500 more, and the blue looks more rich than the 15400. Just wish it was 39 or 40mm instead.

Hard to be objective if you own a 15400. Both are great watches.

I like everything on 15500 excepts thickness.
I assume depends on how sensitive you are about thickness, but i am sure people who really care about thickness>the number of 15400 available in the market, plus silver dial is currently not available on 15500, at least for now. Therefore there is a shortage so price should go up.

I remember when the 400s came out. The 300s disappeared pretty quickly and they’ve gone up in value steadily over the years. I don’t see why the same thing wouldn’t happen now.

15500—serious design issue with the date being pushed out by so much. Pass.

Not true. Have you ever owned a watch and then a new edition came out and decided to “upgrade”?

I just prefer to 15400 over the 15500.

Strongly disagree. The half marker at 3pm on the 15400 is more of a design issue to me.

I really like new movement, finally a movement that fits the 41mm case size, the previous movement was too small compared to the case size and makes me feel that the date placement is forced, which refrain me from buying 15400st in the first place, looking at the 15500st in slate grey I think the color looks very similar to the ruthenium, I'm considering on getting this piece.
