Help buying my first Rolex

Hi all. I’m new to the forum so please be gentle!

I’m just approaching my 40th birthday and recently secured my dream job due to start the same time as my birthday so I’d really like to treat myself to a watch to commemorate.

I have always loved watches but am very much a novice which very little horological understanding! I currently only have one watch - an Omega seamaster professional (Black face) which I bought to mark my 30th. Therefore this watch is likely to be both an everyday watch and also passed on to my son when he is old enough to inherit it!

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions they could make as to which Rolex may make the best purchase (Obviously I’m aware personal preference plays a huge emotional part) but knowing where to start can be tricky. My first thoughts were a daydate 41 (either silver or blue dial) on a jubilee bracelet. But I’d love to hear from people who love the brand as much as I think I’m about to!

Many thanks

Congratulations on your new role. DJ 41 blue dial, fluted, jubilee is a great watch.

You need to let people know what budget you’re working with.

Can you share more info about what you are looking for.. for example do you prefer stainless steel, or previous metals.. and do you have a budget in mind?.. also do you want to have the piece by a certain date, or are you willing to wait to get the right watch?

One other thought..

I always base my watch purchases on how the watch wears on my wrist.. so you have to go to a dealer and try them on

1. I think you meant Datejust 41.
2. If that's the watch you like, then go try different variations and make a decision.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Was thinking about £5k - £8k ish. As for metals I have no strong opinion as long as it looks classy. I’ll be wearing it with a suit most days and I dress fairly smart even on a weekend.

I agree with the blue dial. It is a wonderful watch that two of my friends have! Elegance!

Welcome to the forum.

For a first Rolex, I usually recommend sticking to one of the classics. If you're in a sports mood, either the Submariner (my choice) or GMT would be great. And if you'd like something a bit on the more dressy side, a Datejust has as much Rolex history DNA as any watch they make. Your suggestion of a DayDate is a great one as well.

The good news is you can't go wrong here. Congrats on the recent career milestone (and age milestone as well haha). Let us know what you pick.

The DJ41 is a great choice. You need to try the different dials and combinations. The fluted bezel is a classic. It is a very subjective decision and you will get lots of different opinions.
You will know the ONE once you have it on your wrist.

I’ve got to say that the blue face DJ looks amazing and certainly seems to be where my heart is leading me!

I also purchased my very first Rolex at the age of 40, I’ve been wearing my Tag Huer automatic over 10 years before leaping into the world of Rolex. Like you I was a newbie and consult the forum for guidance and advise but watches are depend on our personal taste and desire. You seem to content with Omega SMP for 10 years, any Rolex would suffice your need. DJ41 has newest movement, incredible design, perfect geometry and Rolex most recognize watch over many decades. You can’t go wrong with DJ41 as your first and I believe it will never look old for another few decades. The best thing about DJ41 is that you don’t have to wait in line like sport professional line watches.
If you want something dressy and classic get jubilee with fluted bezel. If you want something sporty and elegant get oyster bracelet with either/or smooth bezel. Pick the dial that you like the best IN PERSON not base on someone photo because you might be disappointed in flesh. Good luck and congrats
BTW - if you discover this place and keep hanging around here long enough, it will cost you a lot of money.

Congrats. I’d personally go for a two tone DJ 41 in YG, fluted bezel jubilee bracelet.

I like your instinct of a DJ41 blue dial. That blue dial with jubilee and fluted bezel is gorgeous. Very popular too.

Help buying my first Rolex

Date Justs are quite common...But I like them. I do prefer the original 36mm classic size. I think the super-sized versions look a bit strange proportion wise.

Lucky for you, ADs have lots of DJs in the case these days abs Subs and GMTs

Go try on a boatload!

DJ 41 with blue dial, fluted bezel, and jubilee would be a fantastic choice. It's a stunning, versatile watch that can easily be dressed up and down.

This is a big purchase and a first with the brand. My biggest piece of advice is do not compromise on whatever your heart's telling you. If you end up wanting the blue but only another color is available in the near term, then wait it out.

Congrats in advance on hitting the big 40 and starting at the new job!

I agree on a DJ 41 with the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet; the blue is stunning but hard to source from some ADs (at least here in the states it is) so my advice would be to go on the website and play around with some different dial colors and see what really speaks to you...if it turns out to be the blue one - then find an AD and get on a list!

I’ll throw a wild card into the mix ... you may want to check out the Milgauss. It’s got a bit of a funky, cool thing going on IMO and dresses up or down easily. A slightly larger wearing watch too, if that’s at all a factor.

Sounds like a GMT Master II with black bezel to me. It's the perfect everyday watch if you wear a suit often. Works well on casual weekends too. The pop of green on the dial is like a pocket square for the watch, and the polished center links make it suitable for any dressy occasion.

It’s up to your taste.....

If you’re already into a DJ41,
I would tell you check the white or rhodium dial with jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel.....

But if you ask me what would I really recommend you,
it would me a SubC.......

Buy what you’ve had a passion for, and it doesn’t really mean buy a Rolex.

I bought a Submariner date recently after having a Tag Heuer CT5111 for a long time my wife got me for our wedding nearly 20 years ago. I love that watch but wanted a Rolex since I was very young. We didn’t have much when we were kids and my father always would comment when someone had a Rolex on. I’ve loved watches since I got a digital “Star Wars” watch at age 7. Had a Seiko automatic divers I paid $250 for in college and still have but thought the Submariner was the ultimate watch.

Finally pulled the trigger on a 116610 and it will go to my son one day. Next year I’ll get my wife something nice watch wise that will go to my daughter.

I see a lot of people get a bunch of watches just to have a bunch of watches, whatever, that’s great if you got that kind of money. But nothing beats something that has some emotion behind it.

Good luck in your hunt.

I think you should go for:

Ceramic Daytona white dial
GMT BLRO SS

Either of these are good to get!
