When did “Professional” begin?

In which year did Rolex first use the term Professional to describe the Collection of tool and sport watches?

Its really a term coined after OMEGA's "PROFESSIONAL" nomenclature.

Its already "implied" that ROLEX "sports" models are "professional" and why this term has stuck here and there and now appears in ROLEX' website is beyond my understanding

Rolex uses the term on their site, but you don't know why people would use it?

Beats me, prolly an associative response with OMEGAs PRO line is all I can figure.

I do not use the term to associate any ROLEX !

And why would anyone, "Itsa ROLEX" ~

And btw, thank you ROLEX for not adding, "PROFESSIONAL" underneath the crown like OMEGA does, sheesh, its already enough with 6 lines of text !:banghead :

I do not know the exact year but all I can say is that when I started to get interested in Rolex in the mid '80s nobody used that term. Subs, GMTs and Explorers where mostly referred to as sports models.

Talking of weird names, what’s up with that old Cellini Castillo from the 90s? What was that about and what did it even mean?

... and Danaos? How are you even supposed to pronounce that?

Swiss sense of humor at work.

Castillo is Spanish for castle. Danaos was a mythical Egyptian king. I dunno why either were used as watch names.

I thought Danaos was latin for the "Greeks"...?

My question was really about the logic of having sub-collections within the Cellini collection. Never made sense to me.

I looked thru some Rolex catalogs I have. The first year I saw the term "Professional" used was 2000. All the earlier catalogs just separated watches by Tudor, Cellini, and Oyster Perpetual.

Thank you!

Presumably the “Classic” name emerged about the same time?

I’ve always wondered why they felt the need to group them like this. The brands in the collections seem such strong assets and stand alone well.
