Said goodbye to another kitty today.
We got 2 cats from the pound about 16 years ago when my son was a year old and wouldn’t sleep in his bed. He now drives my cars!!!
The one on the top we had to have put to sleep last month. His name was George and he was a real cool Siamese dude that was about 20 years old when kidney failure finally took him from us. King George as we called him. He was a bad a$$ in his day. The black and white fella was Gilbert. He was named after the cat in the cartoon Caillou. His story is this.........We had a dog that bit my son in the face when he was young. The dog was old and sick and we made the tough decision to euthanize the dog after he bit the boy. When we went looking for another dog at the pound my son wanted nothing to do with a dog. All he wanted was a cat named Gilbert because of the brat kid in the cartoon (if you have ever seen the cartoon you know what I mean. The kid is a total whiny D bag). My wife and I were not cat people to say the least. After much begging by the boy we relented to at least walk thru the cat room. And that black and white fella on the bottom got his attention. Needless to say, we walked out with a cat. Never in a million years imagining that we would be here 16 years later with two cats. We had no idea they lived that long. The pound guessed that Gilbert and George were both about 5-6 years old when we got them. The vet agreed. With Gilbert being a year or two older. We recently had been prepping the kids that Gilbert was old and was slowing down. Then George went from his normal daily life to his last days very quickly. He had kidney failure that we didn’t even know about until it was the worst lab result our vet had ever seen. Took us by complete surprise. The mission turned to keeping Gilbert around as long as possible. Then he began vomiting. Argh. To the vet we go. Thinks it may be a vitamin D deficiency and IBD. On drops and steroids we went. He was back to his youthful self, running around, eating like a kitten. Had 3-4 great weeks with him all roided up. Thought we had found the fountain of youth. Then one day the vomiting comes back and it had some blood in it. We stopped the med, he stopped eating and we end up on kitty chemo pills for what vet thought was cancer of some type. We were not taking aggressive measures to do surgery to confirm on a 22 year old cat. He just never recovered. Stopped eating about a week ago and as he kept drinking we kept hope. Last night he went downhill fast and today (luckily the wife was off work) he got worse. We waited for the kids to get off school and took him in to the vet for the last time. I will still say my wife and I are not cat people. But we were these two cats people. And we had 15 or 16 awesome years with them and they had an awesome home. Sorry for your losses, Brandon. It is always gut wrenching to lose what has become members of a family.

Sorry for your loss Brandon. Have lost 2 little ones over the last two years. Always amazed what a big hole these little guys leave in the family when they pass.

Sorry for your losses. You did right by them.
I'm down to one cat from three. I know the drill. I rescued him 10 years ago pulling him out of the engine of my car during a hot July night. He was estimated at 5 weeks old. He's my buddy, always in the room wherever I am and in my face in the morning looking for food. My girlfriend isn't a fan. I told her we're a package deal and there is zero chance in hell I'm separating from him. |

I love cats as they are much more independent than dogs although they can really be some Dbags if they want.
I have had 3 cats in my life so far. None at the present. One of my Cats KITTY suffered from Kidney Failure as well and we had to keep giving him injections at home for the longest. Eventually their was nothing else that could be done so we had to put her down. RIP KITTIES

I had a brother and sister kitty combo for 15.5 years, the sister passed away in August from an illness and the brother followed in October from a broken heart. I know how I feel every day and it isn’t easy so I only can wish you the best and hope you find some comfort.

Sorry to hear Brandon. Sounds like they lived a great life with you and your family. Always tough to make that final call.
I was never a cat person until my wife brought home an abandon kitten (she says it was abandon … lol). He lived for 22 years as well. The day we put him down I wept like a baby. It was me who found the next stray (right …. ah ha) I guess I'm now a cat person.

Very sorry to hear. My cats have made my life much richer and more fun; every time I've lost one, it's been a major punch in the gut. RIP Gilbert and George!

Thank you all for your kind words.
Today was still a little somber around here. I need to go out now that the kids have gone to bed and get the litter box cleaned up and out of the house. Sure that will be a difficult thing to do. Guess I have to be careful as Gilbert was on kitty chemo and they warned the wife about the pills and litter box. Have a feeling we may end up with a new one but I would prefer to wait quite a while as we now know this is a very long term play and my kids are already in high school. I am sorry for your loss. I, too, lost a pet potbelly pig last Friday and can’t even throw out her bowls or blankets. They really are a part of your family and your heart.
