Datejust 36mm 126234, the best of Basel 2019. The rest, disappointment

The Datejust 36mm 126234 is the model that I like most of all presented at Basel 2019. Rolex returns to its origins with the more stylized box and incorporates the 3235 movement. The rest that the Swiss brand presented is a disappointment.

Beautiful Datejust 126234

The Batman is more of the same as the Gold DD. The Tudor BB P01 is horrible.

It is simply my opinion, and I expose it here because it is a forum to debate and without disrespect. You do not always have to agree with Rolex.

Beautiful piece ! This is tempting me more than ever to trade my SubDate for a silver DJ36. If I did tho can’t decide if would be oyster or jubilee.

In my opinion, I like the Datejust more with Jubilee and fluted bezel

it doesn't have a hidden clasp so that's a big step back imo

Looks fantastic. Also would have preferred the super jubilee, but the clasp naturally also have its benefits

Meh, too small, Jubilee bracelet: not my cup of tea. But I do like the proportions of the case.

Lovely. Be nice to see more dial colours available though. I always find Rhodium a bit bland.

I agree that the return of a slimmed down lug profile is a step in the right direction.

This is indeed a BIG step in the wrong direction. While the new clasp gives you the 5mm extension, the hidden clasp with just the crown provides for better quality and looks way better.

I must agree:

..except I wanted it in white and wished they would have kept the railroad track around the dial.

I was waiting for them to get rid of the railroad track. Different strokes for different folks.

One of my favorite pieces in the entire catalogue but Rolex seems to not be able to make their minds up with supersizing then down sizing cases and lugs, etc as in the DJ, DJII, DJ41,DD,DDII, DD40. Too many models. Cant keep up

I brought the old version last year right after Rolex convinced me they were going to discontinue the hidden clasp. I am extremely happy they indeed do that this year.

No desk scratch after almost a year of daily abuse and my 116234 still looks like new. The hidden clasp version looks almost as elegant as my DD president bracelet, plus, it fits my oyster BLNR perfectly.

I'm so glad that Rolex realizes that function comes before form. Having to buy half links and add/remove links for a tiny fit adjustment was the real step back.

I totally agree. This is the best of 2019's baselworld. I love the new DJ & with the easylink extension it's just perfect.

I have the easylink bracelet in my Explorer and love it, but have a 116234 on order. I deliberately accelerated the order to get the hidden clasp as well as the white stick dial. I had no advance knowledge but given the larger model and the TT going to the EasyLink last year it seemed likely for the change in the DJ36 this year. Just different wants among different people.

That is also IMO the best of the new Rolex models. I am, however, disappointed that they decided to discontinue the hidden clasp. Not a deal breaker, but it made it more of a special bracelet.

Cheers,
Carl

I don't need or use the easylink. I'd rather have the super jubilee, but it wasn't available on the DJ I got from last year. Still a great watch, as is this new one. The slimmer lugs are just elegant.

I disagree. The dial looks worse and the lack of concealed clasp is a HUGE downgrade. The hidden clasp is so elegant and now it’s gone.

Agreed, but I believe there are both Pros & cons associated to the new model, depending the specific DJ configuration you are talking about.

If you compare the new 2019 model to a more "sporty" version of the old DJ (Oyster bracelet, stick indices), the new release is a big improvement - new movement, redesigned lugs and dials.

However, if you consider a more elegant version of DJ 116234 (Jubilee, Roman numerals on Dark/Rhodium dial), the new version is not an upgrade at all. In fact, such models could see increased demand due to the discontinued Super Jubilee and roman dials.

Is the bottom line for the DJ36 the new movement and adding a better clasp?

I get that the case profile is classic 36mm.

That new case is much nicer than the old one. Dials are cleaner and more contemporary. Looks bigger too. Having tried the bi-metal on in the new vs old model the new design is far more elegant (besides the clasp).

In what way is it “nicer”?

It appears to be the same dimensions as the DD 36mm case to me. And despite for the materials used, that case has been the same for a decade or more.
