Boyhood dream
The following story may cause laughter and follow me around for a long time but that doesn’t stop me from writing it. In a previous post I wrote that although I like music, my musical skills rank below that of a lamppost. I once had a few classical guitar lessons and that turned into a disaster. But the guitar still is one of my favourite, if not the most favourite instruments. And there are ‘guitar heros’ in almost every country. From Stanley Jordan, Earl Klugh, Steve Vai, Jan Akkerman to Rory Gallagher and Garry Moore.
One of my boyhood dreams (and secretly still is) was to casually walk into large music store Feedback in Rotterdam and browse around a bit. The store is huge, has an amazing collection of guitars and a very friendly sales staff that all can play an instrument (to work there you have to be able to read music and play well). One of the staff approaches me and asks if he can help or that I just want to look around. Well, I answer, I want to buy a guitar. Electric? Yes. Any instrument in particular? ’56 Custom Shop Fiesta Red Strat. Do you want to try it out first? Yeah, but I haven’t had many lessons. Never mind, we all had to learn first. He hooks it up and I play the solo from Gary Moore’s ‘Out in the fields’, followed by the long solo from ‘The Loner’. Jaws drop, the guy is awestruck and customers gather. Before I hand it back over I play Edward van Halen’s ‘Eruption’ and say: “not a bad guitar, not bad at all”. Then I leave the store and go home again. (Story ported to 2006).

Hey! I can play all of those, including Hendrix' version of The Star Spangled Banner! You simply MUST get one of these "Air Guitars", Frans!!!

I have one of those. Mine is completely transparent. Even the strings are see through. Crowds go wild when I start playing. They can't believe the great sound that comes out of a transparent guitar.

Air guitars...............................more like air heads.
Hey Frans, if you could play like you do in your dream, you wouldn't need to go into a shop, they'd be coming to you.

I wish I could just plop down and play an instrument that grabbed the attention of a room in a good way, not make them run for the door.
I have a friend in his 70's, that grew up playing in a Dixie land band, he can jump on a piano and make everyone in the whole room gather around him and start singing and dancing, it is too cool for school. He can also play the classics like Bach, etc.... the guy is outstanding.

A high school classmate of mine is a flautist with the National Symphony Orchestra. Does your wife know anyone in the NSO?
