Trading Based on Market Value
So many threads these days based on recent trends in market value and flipping to be able to get essentially a more expensive watch. It really begs a fundamental question of why we enjoy and collect our watches?
I loved the look of a Rolex sub for as long as I can remember. I am now lucky enough to own both a sub and a GMT. Then came many others purely based on aesthetics and appeal such as daytona and other brands in my signature. Is all that out the window now that my watches are worth more? Just because I can use the current market to get myself into a PM? I think many with this mentality will be left feeling empty when all the dust settles because they will truly miss what got them into watches in the first place. Just my 2 cents. Thoughts welcomed!

Why downgrade to a less desirable PM model?
Wait, let me make sure I'm wearing my flame resistant clothes.

I think you paint with too broad a brush. I’m sure some people fall into the category you describe, but consider some alternatives...
1. Always appreciated and wanted PM, but bought SS or TT to accommodate budget needs. 2. Began to appreciate PM as tastes matured, and the current market provides an easy upgrade opportunity. 3. Was already planning/saving for PM and current pricing accelerates their acquisition. 4. People who have been buying and enjoying PM long before the current market craziness. As to jsausley’s comment, “less accessible” and “less desirable” are not the same. PM watches (both Rolex and other brands) have been aspirational pieces for generations. |

What does it matter why other people collect things as long as you are collecting for your reasons? |

So the underlying premise that we all really just want PM but "settle" for SS because we can't afford PM?
And for the record, I am all for people to collect what makes them happy. Just a conversation

Some are buying PM just because it’s more expensive and they can. Some are buying because it’s now accessible and wasn’t before. Some have always preferred PM. Some think it’s over the top, ostentatious, “bling”, and would never consider one. You tried to assign a single motive and stereotype buyers who are upgrading to PM right now in the current inflated SS market. I’m simply pointing out that there are many other motivations and buyer personas you’ve not considered. |

I went to PM recently because the gap in pricing between SS and PM has shrunk so much it gave me a great opportunity to justify the splurge to myself!

If the price gap is close to PM then you go PM. All things being equal, no one buys a SS over WG or Platinum if the price point is close.

Nothing in this hobby makes a dang bit of sense. If everyone were rational, we'd all go without a watch, or we'd buy a $15 quartz Casio. But we're not all doing that. We all have our own strange, personal reasons for getting involved in this hobby. Best to just live and let live, ignore the threads that don't make sense to your value system, read the ones that do, and try to have fun.

Of most of the watch collectors I know, desiring a PM watch isn't even on their RADAR.. If they wanted one, they would get one.

Happy to have SS - got grey DaytonaC so could have afforded a PM as few ‘000 more but I wanted a SS as that was the one I wanted. This game is rarely rational - would have I liked to pay MSRP? Of course - who would pay close to double the “price” but the heart wants what the heart wants. Should have bought 10 years ago but other watches were in play then. Perhaps this is proof positive am not in it for the flip/buck.. Do I care about resale? No, but would be good to know won’t take a hit if things got desperate and who knows what the next 2,3,5,10 years hold. Also got another watch soon thereafter - Sea Dweller 4000 (116600) in sons birth year. Again not for resale but see above! These are the watches that sing to me and make me want to look at my wrist rather than my iPhone for the time, date, timer etc surely that’s what it’s all about but each to their own. Hope everyone buys/collects/trades/flips for reasons that make them happy.. What was my point again? Maybe there wasn’t one..? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
