An Offer From AD... Think it’s Any Good?

Stopped by a New AD - had a huge selection and decided to buy wife Yachtmaster 37 (rose gold)

In conversation I told them I had already made plans to purchase a Sky Dweller from another AD out of state and I would need to spread the purchases out to pay for them.

She followed up w/ email that if I purchased BOTH from them they ( VP of store ) would offer 24 month financing option through their preferred Jewelers Credit Card.

Plus $500 store credit & free shipping/insurance.

General thoughts are Rolex are toys and I don’t finance toys. But It seemed like a legitimate good offer, then I dig deeper and they want to charge 9% interest which obviously makes no sense.

Would you counter back or just say No? I’m down for financing at 0% but not much more.

Has anyone tried making AD’s compete against one another?

Do it and transfer immediately to zero-interest cards.

I don't mind financing things at 0% interest for the short term.

I would agree. As long as you have adequate and steady income it is not the end of the world to finance something for a year or two.

Though majority of the zero interest cards these days are not truly zero interest once the fees are factored in.

What references SkyDweller are you buying?

Is the 37 YM in rose gold with black dial or diamond dial?

Did she offer any discount on either watch, or just the $500 store credit?

When you say free shipping and insurance are you talking about just the insurance on the shipping?

Is the 24 month financing at 0%?

Is this second AD also in a state in which you do not reside? (So, neither would collect state sales tax at point of sale?)

Sorry for being unclear, I’m buying the Steal & Gold Sky Dweller. There would be no tax and they would cover the shipping and insurance on the watches.

I had for a second though they were offering 0% for 24 months, but upon further review it’s at 9%. No discounts on the watches just $500 to use in the store (which heck- maybe I could try to throw on the watches)

I’m in Tennessee the two AD’s are in NJ/CT so for now, no sales tax.

With these two watches, I would either ask for discount on the cash payment, 10% is about the right ball park. Or (I would be doing) ask them to through in a popular steel model such as Pepsi, Daytona or hulk.

Bad idea - every card you open creates another hard credit hit. Transferring to 0% interest cards come with mandatory fees, which when factored in result in higher effective rate.

Now - if they are offering blue SkyD, just buy them both cash, then flip the SkyD, making $4-5k in the process towards that 37mm YM RG, which I hope you are getting a discount fir buying?

Why not the 40mm YM if you don’t mind my asking?

I’ve no problem financing at 0 percent but would not even at 1 percent. My ADs use the Wells Fargo advantage which has worked well for me.

Sounds like a bad deal, only $500 credit and 9 percent financing? Think you should get a discount on both.

IMO it is not a good idea to go into debt for nonessential luxury items.

AD's Offer:
TT Sky Dweller at MSRP
PM Yachtmaster at MSRP
9% financing
free $500 in store credit

That's horrible. The new 37mm yachtmaster might be in demand now, but it will be easy to be had at a discount soon. Its a pricey piece at $22K for a PM case and a rubber strap. I see the 40mm gold piece on here for almost 20% off.

The TT Sky Dweller should be had for about 5-10% off.

This is not a good deal in my opinion. You can already pick up both these watches for about 20% off on the YM and 10% off on the SD. If you buy both these watches at MSRP you are overpaying by at least $5k. Nothing you do on the margin with financing is going to matter. If you are angling for them to sell you a SS Daytona at MSRP as well or something similar then that would make sense...

9% interest on a luxury purchase is insane.

The only time I’d take finance on a watch is if they offered 0% (or 1-2% max) and would not otherwise give a cash discount.

Its an initial offer and not a firm deal; Can't see any upside benefitting you vs. the AD.

Negotiate Negotiate Negotiate - Always provide your most outrageous offer, as you dont know their pain-point / incentive to sell a PM SD. Happy hunting

Def counter back. They may not have flexibility, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

FWIW, I believe Tourneau was offering 0% interest awhile back.

I agree! Not going to in debt to pay for watches or paying interest.

(My ChevroLet is about the only exception. finance the truck for 3 months And save $2,500) the interest is very little in those three months.

I hope this experience helps someone. I’ll keep you guys posted if I counter.

Like most others on here, I don't take issue with financing something short term. The "deal" offered to you does not seem like a deal to me. Maybe if they offered a discount on the watches or at minimum 0%. Personally, I would not have given this offer a minute of thought.

9% would work out well for a Daytona or Blue Sky. For PM they should be offering you a discount, especially if you buy 2 lol

If you want the watches and can afford the monthly installments then do it! You might never find the skyD again when you’re financially ready for it

Everone is different and has a variety of circumstances, but my only debt is my mortgage and I don't intend on financing anything else. Zero percent would be tempting but it's still a debt and I don't know what the future's made of. I could lose my job tomorrow or face some big unexpected expenses, who knows. I like to buy luxury cash in hand. Call me old fashioned but unnecessary debt is not for me.

I use a credit card every time I buy a watch but its to gain mileage points. I pay the card off at the next payment cycle.
9% is insane and usually this is based of your credit score and debt to income ratio. If they are just offering the best of 9% then who knows if you will even be eligible for this rate until they run your application.

I agree whole heartedly. No financing on watches, maybe I’ll consider 0%.

At first glance I thought that’s what they are offering but it’s not.

Basically you would pay an additional $2k to buy the watch!!! Nope.

Definitely a bad deal at 9 percent. See if they are willing to offer 0 percent financing? Negotiate a better rate or deal... you got nothing to lose.
