Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and hopefully will be joining the ranks of proud Rolex owners soon. I am on the lookout for a pre-owned Sea Dweller, preferably a later model (though I need to sell my Breitling first). As a newbie, is there anything that I should be on the lookout for or consider when looking at used SDs?
- Any issues/differences in various series?
- Tips on telling a true one from a fake?

Anything else to consider or advice?

Hi Chris...welcome to TRF...its a great place to make friends and yes, learn a 'little' about Rolex and other watches too

I dont exactly know differences between various series but to tell an original from fake there are SO many things to look for...if you aren't handling the watch in person, I think there are only visual things like cyclop's magnification, the hands and dial markings etc...but when you get to handle it in oerson, you'll get to know EVERYTHING...triplock crown cannot be faked my buddy..anywa, I know others will have very detailed know-hows...enjoy around here

Welcome Chris! I would say you better have it checked before you purchase the watch unless you buy from a reputable seller!

That's the difficulty when you buy online I guess - hard to know who's reputable and who is not. I am staying away from the 'Bay and sticking to watch forums and making sure sellers have a good number and a variety of posts. Of course, the ironic thing is that I am mostly newer to these forums myself! I can only do so much when it comes to checking the pics, talking with the seller, and checking with references. Hopefully I can find someone that I can trust working with.

I can't wait until I actually have one on my wrist - it's my grail watch and always has been but I let other watches distract me. Not that my recent (<2 years) purchases of a Kobold Seal Ti, Breitling Avenger Skyland, and a Panerai 024H are mistakes, just wish I had "kept the eyes on the prize". If I can unload my Skyland soon then I can make the Sea Dweller purchase.

There are many reputable sellers within the forum itself. Check the For Sale section for you may find what you are after. Good luck mate!

Check with TempoKixg. He just sold a BNIB SD (later M or V serial).

Actually on a Sea Dweller, the cyclops would be a dead give away that it's a fake... (SD's don't have cyclops!)

As others may have said, search the Net and the forums, there are lots of good references as to how to spot fakes, the later series (2002 and up) have the laser etched crystal with the coronet at the 6 o'clock mark... Checking the serial numbers with the papers, looking at the quality of the "type face" on the watch and on the sides are also ways to help with this...

The best way is to "BUY THE SELLER", usually a long timer, or very reputable seller is the best way if buying sight unseen... If you can inspect, ask to go to a Rolex dealer and ask for his/her help...

Also, don't be afraid to ask the seller for his references and talk to people that have purchased form him...

Perfect - thanks everyone! "Buy the Seller" is always great advice. I have seen a couple for sale here and on Watchuseek that seem very nice. Attempting to sell a couple of my watches and using the proceeds to buy one. I have come to realize that I would rather own 2-3 watches I really want as opposed to 4-5 I really like but don't love.

As most have said, buy it from a reputable person/dealer. Unfortuanlly the current fakes are made so well, that it's almost impossible to tell the difference between a real and a fake besides opening up the watch.

How does one ask about dealers/sellers on the forum? Let's say "Person 1" is selling something on this forum and has a good number of posts? How do I check with other members as to this person's past dealings/reputation here?

I tell you.... I thought it was going to be great to finnaly have a SD on my wrist(my 1st Rolex) I was wrong........... Its INCREDIBLE...there is not a day that goes by that I just dont just sit and look at it!!! Welcome and good luck on your search....do your homework it will pay off!~!~

Waiting on a sale of a watch and then will be buying a SD. There seem to be a few of them out there so I will look to get a recent model from a reputable seller.
