Another legend gone,

from a time when the cars were NA, manual clutch and gearbox,

When the drivers duelled and overtook each other, and the beautiful women were everywhere, and the champagne flowed,

r.i.p. niki lauda.

Very sad news here regarding the death of this legend. His story is incredibly inspirational and he will be missed. Rest in peace, Niki.

Having his face burnt in a car accident and surviving was epic. But death is inevitable at the end of the day. RIP

Many people have forgotten or never knew about how dangerous F1 racing was in the 1960s and 70s. There was always a chance that a driver wouldn't survive the race. Lauda was back in the car six weeks after being burned horribly, and he remained an ambassador for the sport to the end. A true legend.

I had forgotten about Lauda airlines and his work after the crash of flight 004, to show that Boeing had an issue with deployment of thrust reversers in flight. He was adamant that his airline was not at fault. Saw a documentary on that once--he was not going to let his airline take a black eye for safety, and without him, that fault could have manifested itself multiple more times. Took him months to get Boeing to issue a safety upgrade.
