Just bought my first new Rolex...

I had decided to buy a new Omega Planet Ocean 8900 43.5. I loved everything about it, but always paused when I paid attention to the thickness of it...I just wondered if I could ever get used to that....I could never pull the trigger on it despite wanting it...

The Rolex Explorer II is something I had always been interested in but obviously they were NEVER in stock at any dealer....I had not seen it in person....only online...The polar dial is so striking. I love the the larger Rolex sizes and the relative thinness compared to the Omega....and the Dual-time/GMT complication....

On a whim, I dropped into a Rolex retailer today and I arrived at the same time they were putting a brand new Explorer II 216570 Polar in the case. I took it as a sign and bought it as I knew it wouldn’t last very long...

My everyday watch for the past 10 years has been a Tag Carrera and it has served me well....I just wanted something different. I have a Rolex President that my father-in-law left me when he passed, but all that gold just isn’t me...I don’t enjoy wearing it.....Hoping this Explorer II does it for me for years to come...

Congrats, this is a very comfortable watch to wear despite its 42mm size.
It has quite a thin case and wears very flat on the wrist.
I think you made the right choice in opposition to the thick and weighty Omega.
So now you're all set to embark upon your Mt. Everest expedition

Really great choice. The explorer line is really the model that stays closest to its tool watch heritage. The larger proportions and thicker hands have actual functional utility increasing legibility rather than the giant lugs for giant lug sake on the subs and gmt.

Congratulations I wear an Explorer II as a daily driver because it’s so comfortable. I think you will enjoy it for many years.

The Explorer II was my first "modern" Rolex and the first Rolex I ever purchased on my own for my 30th birthday. It is absolutely an amazing daily piece and is far more comfortable than its specs might seem. Probably a perfect first Rolex if you want something extremely practical, but desire something a little more sporty than a Datejust.
