Dilemma: GMT Master II

So after chatting with my AD and I was told that I could get either a Pepsi or Batman GMT Master II as a packaged deal with buying some other stuff.

As much as I love and want the Batman, I can’t justify spending the amount being asked of me all at once.

Should I pull the trigger?

What exactly is meant by "other stuff"? Jewellery, other watch brands, other Rolex models? You shouldn't be saddled with extra expenses and product you don't want.
Regardless, I think your second sentence provides you with the answer you are looking for.

Fortunately for me, there is no Rolex watch I want so badly that I'd let someone strong-arm me into buying other stuff in a package deal.

I think you've answered your own question...you yourself said you couldn't justify spending the amount being asked so don't do it.

I think a few of us are keen to know whether the AD indicated what you would be expected to purchase to secure your GMT? Products and prices please.

This can be an expensive hobby, you need deep pockets to play with the big boys.

Very few can get a gmt at mrsp without a decent amount of previous spend.

You either play the game or walk away.

Just tell the AD to boil his head in hot urine and go and spend your money on another watch, I can't believe that people are so desperate to get a Rolex.

Puts tin hat on and waits for flak incoming.

Basically something along the price point of 40K.

I wonder how Rolex would feel about this practice?

You should pool your money with a buddy (or two) who may want the other stuff for their significant other or something. . . It would hurt your pockets less.

Thanks for that. Useful insight. I'm not surprised. All to often I see forum members starting a new thread. Usually titled "incoming" followed by a wrist shot of the latest and greatest hulk, Pepsi, Batman/girl or Daytona. Everyone congratulates telling them to wear it in good health (whatever that means). They swear they would never buy from a grey dealer. I'm always a little curious how they manage to get whatever and whenever they want as if they can just wave a magic wand and the tooth fairy delivers. US$40k is the equivalent of AU$60k here in Australia. Add that to the cost of the GMT and I'm well on the way to getting a Platona or stepping into the big time and going Patek?
I know it's all horses for courses and everyone plays by their own set of rules. It's just very difficult to work out the best strategy sometimes.
I really appreciate you sharing that info, it helps the rest of us put things in perspective. Just out of interest, would you have any difficulty spending an extra $40k in other words are you a person of modest means or not!

Never. 40k extra to get two GMTs? If my AD would make me this kind of package deal I would send him to hell...

Rolex are fine with bundling other Rolexes, they don't like profit sharing with greys out the back door which benefits them nothing. Obviously the watch is cheaper grey so question is if you want a few Rolexes then you might be better off starting a relationship with this AD.

I wonder how Rolex would feel about this practice?

I imagine Rolex would consider this "bundling" in the realm of the dealer as a part of making a transaction..

I don’t know what to say. Would you spend $40k on garbage to save $15k on two watches? If so, you have bigger issues.

only you can decide but from the sounds of it, you aren’t in a position to play the bundle game.

Dilemma: GMT Master II

Don’t listen to anyone but yourself. If you want and can afford then make the deal.

If you can’t then don’t. Buying a watch is to be enjoyed, not stressed about

OK, there is a deal to be made. If you must spend 40k in other watches or items then see what the AD is talking about. A PM Rolex at msrp? How about the Green Dial YG Daytona? A YG/WG DD40 with 20-30% off. You get the thought. How do you make this work and get the watches you want should be the question. You did not create the circus, you are just attending the show. Get the details from the AD on what he wants to make the deal work. If you can get other watches with a significant discount you can sell to a TS but check values first. Get all the information and make a decision. Leave the emotion out of it and do not estrange yourself from your AD. It would be to your advantage in the long run to smile, work a deal or not, and go forward. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You’d spend less money going grey
