Does a blue dial automatically double a vintage Datejust’s price?

I’ve noticed that blue is by far and away the most collectible dial color. I’m wondering if a watch will have its price doubled simply by virtue of having a blue dial.

Blue dials are desirable these days, and there is some premium, but not nearly enough to double the price.

No. Maybe 20-30 percent more, assuming condition is equal to a non-blue DJ, but certainly not double.

FP Journe's Chronometre Bleu is about $32/$21 = 52% higher than the equivalent white dial version.

Don't know about double... But definitely higher premium. I think any dark dial is at a premium versus silver/champagne/white dials when talking DJs or DDs.

I agree blue dials definitely trade/sell higher than non-blue DJs, but the funny thing is that I've owned both, and I definitely prefer the silver dial. Just looks more "vintage Rolex" for some reason. I sold the blue and kept the silver.

You’re comparing apples and oranges. Your silver dial is a 4-digit pie pan model, which would certainly be more “vintage” than your 5-digit non pie-pan blue dial.

I guess it depends on whether blue dials are still fashionable when these current hot dials become vintage.

I think it’s basic supply and demand. From what I’ve seen, there are about 9-10 silver DJs on the market for every 1 blue model. And that may be low.

The blue will continue to sell at a premium if those numbers remain as is.

Blue is really popular at the moment. Sky D blue is virtually impossible to get and command a big premium. The AP RO blue dial boutique also same story. I personally like the TT with blue dial or SS with blue dial, as both pair very easily with everything. Not sure where you are seeing double the premium though, maybe 15-20 percent premium is more reasonable.

Disagree it's apples and oranges. Maybe granny smith vs. golden delicious apples.

Both of those DJs are acrylic/tritium vintage Rolexes. Sure, my silver dial version is about 9 years older with a pie-pan dial, but that's only part of its appeal. Those beautiful iridescent silver Rolex dials have more of a vintage look compared to a blue dial, regardless of the age, IMHO. Still, I agree the blue dials are more sought after, probably because of rarity and the fact that guys love blue.
