Good question. I wonder this too because Milgauss doesn't 'do' anything other than shield against magnetism. Daytonas have whirling dials, the subs, explorers, and gmt's have 24hr hands and rotating bezels, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love the Milgauss, but I'm not sure it'll be a Rolex icon compared to some of the other models.

I dont think so, no real reason to think it is a special piece. But it is very nice and looks great, as do most rolex's

I think its probably the first and last Rolex to have a colored saphire crystal. It will always be relatively uncommon and special. I think it will command a premium in 20 years and be highly desireable.

great question.. i am hoping it does take on some iconic status. it does no more or less than an explorer. and the explorer is absolutely iconic.

i really like the milgauss. wonder if the model would be more 'active' if it were all brushed instead of polished?

either way, it is on my list of a few to look at next, once i get the funds all saved up!

thanks,

mike

There will only be one Milguass and thats the 1950s versions the modern one will never be iconic, its just a Milguass pretender.Much like the modern day Rolex Prince homage, there is only one Rolex Prince, and thats the vintage ones.

Agree that the green sapphire will be. In general the future of the model is its not going anywhere; didya think that ROLEX releases a model and then 10 years down stops producing it?

I like very much 6541, and just a little 1019, don't like at all new one!
Maybe Gv will have a future as a classic

No, I don't think so. Just based on hypothetical production numbers none of them are "rare". Back in the 50-60's Rolex made so fewer of each model it as today. Other than if they made a true numbered limited edition model, I don't see any modern Rolex attain the same collect ability as in the past.

I buy them for my enjoyment, not hoping someday they will be a good investment. Just IMHO, others will surely vary.

I have a white one. It's no iconic model for sure, but it's a nice watch with clean lines. Doesn't get gobs of wrist time, but I enjoy now and then and doubt I'll sell it.

Personally, I'm surprised there was ever any buzz to die down aside from the production hiccups with the GV.

I don't see anything made by Rolex now I would consider an "investment."

I just purchased a preowned Milgauss today on eBay (Black dial, regular crystal). It may not really "do" anything but it sure is a handsome watch. This watch has been on my "must have" list for a while now. It's the 40 mm case size that got me. I just can't wear a 36 mm watch any more. I can't wait to get this puppy on my arm! I will be posting pics of my new arrival very soon!

Do you mean because of current state of the economy, or Rolex's new lineup? Just curious....

I like all the styles of watches Rolex makes and wouldn't kick any of them off my wrist!!! Anywho I've bought my Rolexes to wear and use and am not worried about their investment value in the future.

This is a good question. The Milgauss sure seems to enjoy alot of varied opinions here doesn't it? Im not sure if it would ever be iconic though, but who here has ever seen one in the wild on anyones wrist? I think its a pretty stealth Rolex as most people I see who wear Rolex's have either a Sub or DJ.

What I feel is that with the VERY large production numbers from Rolex, nothing is really ever going to be rare enough anymore to drive up prices to the levels that purchasing one would constitute being called an investment.

Might be worth noting that to me, simply getting screwed less than another brand or model on resale doesn't make something an investment. If you can't get a decent rate of return, then it's just a nice watch that you enjoyed having. Personally, that's all I need to convince myself to buy something.

I find it quite humorous do read the never ending posts here on which model is the best investment, when passbook APR will likely out perform any of the options. Buying a SS Sub and selling it for what a paid for it in 10 yrs might ease the pain of parting with it, but it wasn't an investment to me. How about a smart purchase??

I don't know, but it's on my Rolex short list to eyeball.

40mm may be a deal killer, though.

Future Un-Certain

As you all know we are in tough economic times and as such most businesses have to trim costs, whether they be labour related, manufacture related etc. It has been clear and obvious over the last 6-12 months that the demand for the Milgauss has been greatly reduced and even so for the iconic GV. Therefore if you are in the shoes of Rolex, do you keep making a watch which is hardly seeling in droves? Do you also keep making a green crystal which is not without it's complications when you do not have to? I am just pointing out some facts, I have no idea what Rolex plans to do, but in these times anything can happen and expect some shocks along the way.

It will be a regular production model for years to come, IMHO, it will probably be one of the first models of Rolex's recent releases to be discontinued based on sales performance.

I actually like the white dial one best. Does that come in the green crystal or is that just for the black face?

That's a big no on the green crystal with the white dial. At least not yet. I have the white dial and it is very sharp. Makes a nice dress watch IMO.
