Move from NY to TX?
So here's a thought.
37 years old. Just got married. Plan on starting a family within the next two years. Seriously considering a move from New York to the DFW area. I know. I've heard just about everything. Lived in NY my whole life, but honestly, I'm tired of the lifestyle and what comes with is. Traffic everywhere. Annoying winters. Commuting time is not great. Housing market is obscene. State income tax. We recently spent a week north of Dallas and I really liked it. No traffic, huge roads, tons of places to eat, very nice developments. A little heavy handed on the whole "Texas" identity, but I had a great time. I know visiting and living in a place are two different things, but we have some family that made a similar move and they seem to love it. I think I'm just over it. Yeah, the city is great in bursts, I love pizza, and a lot of friends and family are here, but I think I'm ready for a change. Don't want to spend the rest of my life living how I'm living now to only take advantage of nice weather and an easier lifestyle when I'm much older. Been looking at places around Flower Mound and Frisco. Some very nice new developments with new houses being built as we speak. A million dollar (or less) house in TX in a brand new gated community seems great compared to spending a million in NY to get some 45 year old shack in a nice area in Westchester or if I'm forced to, Long Island. At a crossroads. I'm planning on getting my MBA over the next two years. So realistically it wouldn't be something that happens immediately, but I think I want to push for it.

Luckily you've got some time to think it over and figure out what's best for your family. Considering what you can get for your money down in Texas it's hard not to give it some serious consideration. Any place will have it's pros and cons, without a doubt. The grass often times seems greener on the other side. Who knows, maybe in this case it actually would be. A lot of members here live in either area and will very likely provide some great insight on the aforementioned.
It sounds as if you're fairly certain about wanting to do this though and I completely get why. Either way, I'm wishing you the best and the happiest of times for you and your family, Syed |

LOVE Dallas area except for being land locked, flat and hot/humid summers and cold winters (compared to SoCal).
I have a buddy moving his business there now. Huge house for less than half the price of OC, no state income tax, great food and good night life, golf, schools, etc. are all great. Could save up to 13.3% income tax alone just buy moving but no ocean, mountains and extreme weather keep me here. 37 here with a wife and 3 kids. If you want to move, do it before the kids are locked into schools, sports, community, etc. EDIT: and they have the Cowboys so that completely eliminates any chances of going. haha |

Interesting...I’ve been considering making the same move. I’ve had enough of NY taxes and politics. Love Texas! Dallas/Fort and want to go visit Austin.

Trade in plus and minus on both sides... I expect you might be able to find a balance in NY with some creative thinking?
financial, employment or family reasons I can understand, But not really familiar with change for the sake of change?

I'd do it.
I spent some time in Houston for work (5 months) and actually loved it. Great city , has everything you ever need. Central USA so its easy for travel and also great international connections. Diversity, culture , mix of all walks of life. 10/10 would do it again. |

My wife and I escaped Houston Texas nine years ago and I do mean escaped. The heat and humidity are killers and if you have any interest in scenery nearby, you're looking in the wrong place.
Give Austin a shot. It's an oasis in the middle of a giant wasteland. |

I lived in Dallas back in 89-93 in Richardson right at the Plano line....its was 10x better than Houston IMHO...I was in early my 30's at the time...had a 325i and found no shortage of single " or married " women....had some of the best times in my life back then. My friend lives in Austin....again many times better place to live than Houston... The only negative was in DFW you can get some real bad weather as in a Tornado in the springtime.... |

I moved from Boston to Houston in 2004 and haven’t looked back. Boston is great but for all the same reasons you want to leave NY I wanted to get out. I highly recommend TX, and Houston, you can always travel to NYC if you really miss it.

Grew up in Arlington. Lived in Houston and Austin.
If you are conservative, religious and into watching spectator sports on weekends, either Dallas or Houston would be a good fit. If neither the above, it can take a little longer to find your niche in those cities as it can often be assumed you meet the above criteria. It can be done and the people are still very warm and friendly, regardless. My best friend is currently living in Plano and has found a good group of friends but still finds things that make it difficult to live there such as the unrelenting summer heat and the lack of extensive public lands for outdoor recreation (as opposed to Colorado and Hawaii where he had previously lived). Your assessment of traffic is a little off. Unless you live very close to work, you can spend three hours a day in the car. Especially in Houston. My brother lives in Houston and has for the last 45 years. He hates it but has found enough of a niche with swing dancing, music and swimming groups to stay after retiring. If you are little more liberal or progressive, Austin and even San Antonio may offer a broader appeal. If it wasn't for the heat, I could do either city. I lived in Austin for 8 years and still have very fond memories of that city.

Yeah and the poor Bills suck every year. Most people would leave there in a heartbeat if given the chance. I left another city in the state years ago. Would not go back for all the money in the world.

We have a few friends who made this move, they seem to love it.
Other than a small villa in Sicily for the later years if I make it that far NYC/Westchester is about it for us. Tons of family, I need my Yankee games, and NYC has tons of opportunities in every aspect of life. You will make the decision that is right for you and your family, good luck.

40 years ago when I was 28, I too got out of "all of that crap" and moved to Arizona.
Never looked back, never went back. Best decision I ever made.

I’ve lived in Houston all my life and it’s been pretty good to me. Cost of living is cheap compared to many parts of the country, it’s very green(as in lots of trees and green spaces interspersed with the concrete), very diverse culturally, and has all of the amenities you would expect in a thriving international city.
I live and work Inside the Loop(the geographic, business, and cultural center of the city). I’ve got every cuisine imaginable within a few miles of my home, paved and natural surface trails I can ride my bike to, etc. The heat can be oppressive in the summer months but I guess I’ve learned to live with it over the years. I have friends in Dallas, it’s really pretty similar. Austin is hipper, San Antonio is cheaper, but honestly they’re all good places to live. When I retire I will likely end up in the Hill Country west of Austin. |

I would also look at Austin. Theres a lot going on, Whole Foods started there, downtown actually reminds me a bit of mini Manhattan (active, young, high rise living). It sure exploded since I've been there 20 years ago. Rush hour is a thing, but overall there's a lot to do for a small town. Also, the Texas thing actually becomes normal when you hang out with locals. After a while I found it charming and relatable (As in "Come and take it"). I was actually surprised how much I liked it down there (see AMC: Ride with Norman, Season 1, Texas, that was a fun gig.)

The DFW is a great area and is growing wildly. My brother has lived there for about 10 years and I always enjoy going there when I visit him. The tax benefits, the BBQ/TexMex food, and the hospitality would make me move ASAP if I were you but I am biased. Good luck in your decision making process and I hope you find Texas a wonderful place to call your family’s home. PS: Gig ‘Em Aggies!
