Schumacher SE drawing by Octavio Garcia
Was fortunate to do AP and Renaud and Papi factory tours in 2013. Octavio (Head of AP design at that time and designer of the Schumacher piece) was kind enough to do a quick drawing of the Schumacher I was wearing. It has proudly been on my office wall ever since.
Octavio did such a timeless job in designing this SE. It's a shame that AP hasn't make more use of the Cermet bezel as it has proven impervious to scratches and shines like SS. From my understanding it wasn't an easy material for them to tool. |

I've seen Octavio at work and he looks a natural with a great eye, maybe if he was still there the Code would have come out better. Just glad his legacy is in the 44s and Schumis and on my wrist.

You’re aware of his new venture – Gorilla watches, using Japanese Miyota movements?

Hard to marry up that design with “formerly Creative Artistic Officer at Audemars Piguet”, but there you have it. |

I actually think they are pretty interesting and with cool materials (forged carbon anyone?).

It's like that line in Trainspotting when Sick Boy says that all these talents had it and then lose it - George Best, David Bowie, David Niven, Malcolm McLaren, Elvis Presley.

Personally hope Octavio's venture is successful as I found him a really approachable good guy. Not sure if he left AP to start Gorilla or was pushed out of the company? Anybody with insight on that? I think he did a really great job with the SE Offshores that he designed.
As far as Gorilla goes for the price point I think they are pretty cool. Much more interesting than anything else in the 1k range. Not my preferred aesthetic but at least they are interesting. Surprised they could do forged carbon at such a low price point so I guess I overpaid for my forged carbon GP. |
