Meteorite Dial for a day date

I have an older day/date... a 36.
Would i be able to get a meteorite dial for it if i wanted one?

Do they make them in that size? I know the watches have gotten bigger...and i have always wanted some kind of stone dial but.... the meteorite would be great if i could get it.

Then of course.... there is the issue of Rolex allowing you to put it on there.... if they make it. My watch is platinum so that dial would look really nice.
But Rolex is really fussy about things. I haven't looked into it yet.... but i thought
i would ask here.

Thanks

As I understand it, Rolex will not do it because it was not an available dial for yours when new (and maybe for other reasons too).

There are 36 DayDates with meteorite dials in both WG and YG.

If your model was available with this option I don’t see why you can’t source one?

Or try an Independent.

If you can find one don't be alarmed at the price tag. If you go through with it I tip my hat to you. You must really love that DD.

Do some research and see if the dial you desire was available on the model you own. If not, go with an aftermarket dial from a verified source. Also be prepared to buy another set of hands as the ones you currently own might not work with the new dial. One good thing about going with an independent is you keep your original dial and hands. If Rolex does the swap they typically keep the dial. Good luck.

Not YG, but in WG and Pt. Can’t recall any YG 36mm watch with a meteorite dial.

If the OP has a 18206, the old DD in platinum, then meteorite wasn’t a standard offer methinks. You had to go to the 18956 Special Edition or other Masterpiece DD reference.

The newer 36mm Pt. DD, 118206 did have a couple of meteorite dials over the years.

The current Rolex website doesn’t show meteorite for the 36mm DD.

Hi thanks for your suggestions. I do indeed have an older 18206 ... 36mm.
and NO.... the meteorite dial was NOT available for my watch at the time.
But its possible that the newer 36mm dials wont fit my 18206.

I have always wanted a stone dial and i just never got around to getting one. But now the meteorite dial is out.... and i love it. and it would be so awesome on Pt.

i know its going to be expensive and i am kind of sure i am actually going to do it if i can.
AT least i THINK i am gonna do it. lol

I love the watch..... I LOVE the color of Pt. ..... and i would LOVE a stone dial.

There is a company in Dallas called Time Delay.... i spoke with them today and they
do stone dials for rolex. BUT.... YOU have to provide a genuine dial.... or use the one
you have on your watch. The dial I have on there now is so nice.... its a salmon pink color and i sure dont want to give it up.

i would have to actually buy another 36mm rolex dial and let them use that one to make the stone dial. That way i could keep my original dial.

All this is gonna cost crazy money but.... i am still thinking i will do it.
The person i spoke with at time delay is sending me pics of what their meteorite dial looks like. I would not want any markers on the dial.... just the date window.... and the dial would be clean except for the Rolex logo etc. that way the stone would look its best.

If i dont do meteorite... i will have to think about some other dial. maybe coral or
lapis... or whatever else might go with the white metal of platinum.

what i love about stone is the texture.... like malachite or tiger eye.... or the pyrite in lapis that makes it look like a starry sky.

anyway... thanks for your replies. I'll let you know what i find out.... and maybe with luck.... i'll be able to post a picture of my Plat. with her new dial. LOL
but who knows when THAT will be.

If you don’t do meteorite, lapis on white is indeed nice ...

If you do, lmk? I’d prefer factory, but don’t like the diamond indices.

And — If all they want is any fitting 36 dial to start, you could buy one with a damaged finish pretty cheaply.

Caliber 3055 and 3155 dials are interchangeable. So if you find one for an older model you can fit it into a newer one (except the all new 36mm DD with 3255), and vice versa.

Also, deep in the Time Delay site, I see they only charge $50 refinishing for you providing a damaged dial, <10% of the cost difference, so that would be the way to go.

Happy to see another stone dial fan!

One more thing - If you want to go meteorite, it would be worth asking them which meteorite their dials come from.

The meteorites used are largely raw iron, and can rust very quickly. Rolex makes their factory dials from the Namibian ‘Gibeon’ meteorite, acid-etched with the visible Widmanstätten pattern, and IIRC they also treat the surface to inhibit rust.

Yes I saw that thread about the stone dials.
MAN! I have ALWAYS loved them..... i still dont know why i dont have one after all this time. lol

and yes..... and they told me they have their process for treating the meteorite so it does not rust.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. i have alot to think about.

Cant you just source one with a little patience? The right opportunity will come up over time! Dont give up the original dial

OP - Let us know of any progress in your search? I’m tempted the same way for a WG DD I have - If so, I may also try to source a (more legible) set of black hands for it.

Did any 5-digit (36mm) Day-Dates come with black hands? (None spring to mind.) If not, is there any other 36mm black hand set one might use? What about the black hand set for a Polar Explorer, or would the length (or center fit) be a problem?

I vote for meteorite, and then lapis.

Here is what I would do: contact one of the trusted sellers in your area and ask if he can source it. They are good at sourcing watches and dials.

Mine is a 2018 DD36 (118348) YG Meteorite/diamond dial, so definitely was made recently. Can’t post pictures because my count is too low still.

DAC2, did this swap ever happen? Would love to hear an update on how things turned out.

Turns out that I’ve got a 118206 that I’d really like to swap out the factory dial for a glacier waves dial. Can’t find it anywhere, so I find myself not wearing it at all- sad, for a grail I’d otherwise like to enjoy.

SO I am digging up this old thread. Its been a few years since i was back here. I totally forgot my login and even my name.
I think the pandemic turned my brain to oatmeal. lol

Anyway.... I decided to trade in my Platinum DD 18206, 36mm for a newer model with the solid links in the bracelet... the 118206, 36 mm.

I got ALOT of money for my trade in and the Platinum i traded for has the
plain glacier blue dial with the romans. Its a lovely dial and i love the increased weight of the watch. BUT.... I have ONE question......

When a watch is polished.... does anyone know about how many grams of metal
get taken off? My 'newer' watch is OLD and its likely been polished more than once
in its lifetime. I talked with Rolex service center this morning and they told me
the original weight of the watch was 227 grams. Mine only weighs 220.

the watch is 20 years old.... so its likely been polished more than once.
it has all the links and its lovely... BUT ! it weighs less.
I only went with the watch seller I got it from because of the amount of money i was offered on my trade in. others were offering me ALOT LESS money.

I'm not sorry i did it because i still got a lovely updated platinum DD for very little money
out of my pocket. But still..... knowing about the tiny loss of metal from polishing
is an irritant. lol

OK.... Glad to be back here. At some time in the future I'll be going after a
stone dial again.

But for now.... I love the glacier blue and am happy to have that one.

hope everyone has been well.

0.4% per polish

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClSrYKhrL8Q

EDIT:

To be clear.

Before polish:
6.775 Oz
192.06802 Grams

After polish:
6.745 Oz
191.21753 Grams

So per polish ~ 0.8g

This was a big watch though, I would imagine a smaller watch would lose less per polish.

Well thats interesting.... my day date is a good sized watch. WAS 227g and now its 220g

in 20 years.... GOD only knows how many times it got polished. other than that.... dont know what could be making the watch as light as it is. All the links are solid.

Thanks very much.
