Datejust rust?

Hi Folks,
My first post. I just joined this morning. Thanks for having me.
I've had this watch from new. Got it from a dealership around 1999/2000.
I thought it had a champagne dial, but as time has passed, I've found out it was a silver dial originally and apparently it's rust!
I always liked watches but could never justify the expense. This piece came as payment for a promo shoot undertaken for the dealer.
Recently, I figured I'd buy a couple of watches I could leave for my sons. Had no idea about waiting lists etc, and I refuse to pay double for 2nd hand pieces. Nothing against those that do, it's your money so be my guest.
Anyways, my dealer has a Sub Date for me if I want it so, do I trade it, do I keep it, do folk like this kind of thing or is it a rusty watch in need of a new face?
I also have a white gold cellini that I love, but it's just too small for me. I think it will suit my wife, who gave it to me on my 50th, so won't be trading that.
Thanks for advice in advance.

Brass cannot rust and thats what the dial is made from, the paint on the dial could have water damage or just a paint pigment problem.

Correct, this isn't rust it is just patina of the dial paint from moisture inside the case.
I think it actually looks pretty nice

I think the movement should be fine, as the watch has been serviced and had the glass replaced well after the face changed colour.

Thanks for the info folks, and also the compliments.
64,000 dollar question though. Will it affect the value, compared to a watch with a perfect face?
Asking so that I’m not taken in by a salesman trying to pay as little as possible for it.

Wow, that 'dealer' was very nice to 'pay' you with a model that had an issue...

Still, doesn't look bad! Maybe bring it in for a service? After 20 years it could be worth it, and indeed, I would also like a picture of the movement...

First post. Wasn’t sure if it would go down well. Played it straight.

Well, it had no issue when it was received...
It happened gradually over time, and when it went for it’s first service, the discolouration was so slight, i thought that was the colour of it, and called it champagne. Years later when it went in for a second service, i was informed that it wasn’t champagne, and the discolouration was slightly more pronounced. The glass had a tiny chip on the surface so that may have been the cause. Got a new glass. Pretty sure if anything else was wrong, Rolex would have metioned it. They wouldn’t service it without me agreeing to replace the glass.

Keep the watch and leave it as is at least until the next service.

Some people will kill for a watch with patina of most any kind and certain kinds of patina will increase the value exponentially.

Check out the Explorer II watches with the cream dials. Those started out as white dials and turned color over time. They're a very sought after variety of an otherwise under-appreciated reference.

I think it looks cools. Will it affect the value? Who knows - some will like it some won't. But if it runs fine you should be OK.

I think it adds character. Love those machine turned bezels too. Rolex doesn't do them anymore.

Thanks folks for the help and nice comments about the patina. You’ve made me think twice about trading.
