New dial name...what a joke

"martian soil"...

Not going to call out the dealer, but that's what this is described as. Unbelievable.

I think I've seen them use that same description previously, or maybe it could've been the same watch

In fairness, I'm not sure what I would write next to "Dial" either

How about , Needs a new dial . Just about sums it up really , why can’t dealers or sellers just be a little more honest in their description of the watch instead of trying to big up the emperors new clothes .

Deteriorated and damaged dial is the description that should be next to all of these named dials.

I have an alternate view:

When are we going to grow a pair and start calling these what they are: damaged...trashed...destroyed?

Our love for patina and the ultimate desire for the “tropical” has gotten out of hand. And until guys stop buying these POS it will continue. Stop the madness.

It’s so true. Tropic dial can now range from kind of a light cool brown color to a thrashed dial that is clearly ruined. I think this one is rather interesting but i can’t see paying for it.

They also called vintage DJ dial "London sky"! (others call it "ghost dial")
They are obviously having some fun making up nicknames for different dials.

It looks like mold.

I saw this one and thought it was kind of cool. Not cool enough to buy though.

Saw that on their website this morning. Their prices for patina watches are crazy. However, I have to admit this does look really interesting. I wouldn't buy it, but I do kind of like it.

How about this: "Patinated"

The word patina comes from the Italian patina (shallow layer of deposit on a surface) derived from the Latin patĭna (pan, shallow dish). Figuratively, patina can refer to any fading, darkening or other signs of age, which are felt to be natural or unavoidable (or both).

The chemical process by which a patina forms or is deliberately induced is called patination, and a work of art coated by a patina is said to be patinated

"Martian soil" is a tad obnoxious, I think is what is being agreed on here. Description ought to be as objective as possible, without ascribing an opinion to it.

Clearly this. They're going meta on the trend for silly dial descriptions, although you do have to be in on the joke to get it.

I think so also. Just a tongue-in-cheek reference (maybe solely to ruffle feathers?).

As long as the obligatory peanut in every steamer doesn't make it on the dial.

I agree the names are silly and these type of dials should be worth less than nicely aged ones but...

It’s all a matter of opinion and I don’t mind the look of the dials posted above at all, I’d rather have a nice dial with just aged lume but if someone gave me that watch I sure as hell wouldn’t complain.

I just think it’s a tad disrespectful saying it’s trash as it might be what someone likes the look of or a watch that’s aged that way after decades in the family etc. Especially the one 42itus posted, that is pretty interesting if you ask me and I would rather have that dial than a mint gold hour marker dial with white lume. I only really like the matte dial subs with applied lume so it’s an improvement in my eyes to a mint applied marker dial.

If I sold you a rusted up / water damaged car at a premium and called it something special, you wouldn't find that at least a bit worrisome??

It's one thing to sell the watch with these amazing names; it's something totally different when you mark it up and pass it off as a special piece because it eroded a certain way.

I guess in my eyes, I'd either 1.) put a disclaimer in there somewhere that this is a damaged dial or 2.) not put such a premium on it.

To each their own though...

I think the more worrisome part would be that he actually paid a premium for said car.

Giving dials these names is a good way for them to get publicity. We're all talking about it, aren't we? My favorite was the 1500 Date with the Electric Cactus dial. They're just having a laugh.

Dealer 1: "Wow this dial is ruined. What do we do?"

Dealer 2: "Let marketing worry about that!"

Marketing: "Guys, I found a way to charge a 10% premium for that ruined dial. Meteorite? Try MARTIAN!!"

<all three high-five>

...

...

RSC: "Sir, the dial of your GMT has rusted to the movement. We can't service your watch."
